Cyclists will go helmet free in rides across Australia on Saturday 17 March in support of helmet choice.
Organised by Freestyle Cyclists, the rides aim to highlight the importance of cycling as a healthy and sustainable form of transport but which is being held back in Australia because of helmet legislation.
With Sydney facing a lot of transport challenges, we need to be encouraging people to look at riding a bicycle as alternative. Threatening them with one of the world’s highest fines for something that is considered normal in most countries, is having the opposite effect.
Most bicycle-related fines are for failing to wear a helmet, while implementing measures that would make cycling safer are moving at a snail’s pace. Freestyle Cyclists wants Australia to join the rest of the world, and move beyond helmet fines.
The Sydney ride will start at Centennial Homestead, Centennial Park at 11am and end at about 12 noon after two clockwise laps of Grand Drive. Supporting rides will take place in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Wellington (NZ) at the same time.
Internationally bike helmet laws have been almost universally rejected. These laws prevent the uptake of cycling and the associated loss of benefits are greater than any potential safety gains. The practice of fining people for this healthy and benign activity makes no sense.
It’s time to say enough. Stop fining healthy transport.
