Event Description

CYCLE FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Fremantle WA to Campbelltown NSW

 March 19 to April 20 2011

Cystic Fibrosis is something that we often hear about, but don’t understand the impact it has on an individual and their families.

One in every 2500 babies born will be diagnosed with this disease. The average life of an individual with CF is that of 30years and there is no cure. CF affects many organs within the body but specifically the lungs and pancreas. The ineffective movement of salt between cells creates a thick sticky mucous that results in blockages of these organs. The repetitive infections of the lungs lead to irreversible damage and death. Individuals living with CF undergo extensive daily regime of medications and physiotherapy.

Over recent years we have seen an increase in the life expectancy of children effected by CF. This is due to early intervention and identification of lung infections before symptoms are present. This allowing for a better quality of life.

Scott Nestorovic and Jason Morris have a personal reason to put in months of training for the Today for Tomorrow Cycle for Cystic Fibrosis in March and April 2011. Jason’s  two-year-old son has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Scott and Jason are training to ride, over 4,200kms over 31 days with little William as their inspiration. The goal is to raise at least $31,000 in 31 days for the Cystic Fibrosis researchers at AREST – Australian Respiratory Early Surveillance Team based in Perth – and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney.

“We will ride an average of 150kms a day which will mean riding between six and 12 hours everyday,” Scott said. Scott and William’s father Jason will ride the entire distance with other cyclists joining them for parts of the journey. This event has been made possible by the amazing sponsorship by Interlink Roads, FRF Sports, Powerade, Bont cycling shoes, Champion Systems Clothing, Winners Nutrition and Sola Sports – as well as the generous support to help us promote the Cycle for CF through the Austereo Network and Channel 9.

At Today for Tomorrow, funds raised go to The Children's Hospital at Westmead in Sydney, and AREST CF who are world leaders in CF research based in Perth. It is a basic aim to give these children a better quality of life and longevity son one day they will be around to receive a cure.
