Cycling in Sydney Australia
I'm looking for a good winter jacket < $100, I am currently using an ALDI jacket that is good but does not cut it for < 10 degree temperatures.
Any advice, i'm in the west of sydney and temp get down to around 3 degrees in the morning.

Fireline jacket is the one i use. I didnt get mine on ebay, it was one of the online shops ages ago.
Its great, wind proof, kind of water resistant, and fleecy lined. I ride down from the mountains to the riff and i think it gets down to about -500 C in the mornings ..... no, really !!! ;)
This jacket is great.
Have a hunt through the Competitive Cyclist apparel sale - there are some bargains to be had.
What are you after? Something that is windproof? Some things to look out for:
- whale tail at the back so it covers your lower back when bent over
- high collar and elasticated cuffs to keep you sealed up
- venting zips (usually under your arms) in case it starts getting too warm
- if it'll be your base layer (i.e. worn next to skin, rather than over the top of something else), wicking properties so it pulls sweat away.
- breathable, so you don't become a rolling sauna.

This one fits the category of "functional" rather than "beautiful", but for $40 seems a damn good deal. Also available in retina-burn yellow.

International shipping from the US is expensive, whoever you buy from. That's why you've got to buy up big to defray the cost, or place a combined order with some friends etc.
Permalink Reply by Michael Fagan on May 10, 2012 at 5:21pm I think your best solution is good long sleeve base layer from someone like Craft and a windproof Gilet. Sub 100 bucks makes it tough. trawl through Chain reaction and wiggle as they're all dumping winter stock.

I have one of these http://www.groundeffect.co.nz/product-detail-FRO-WIN.htm it is very warm and breaths well
Permalink Reply by Michael Fagan on May 10, 2012 at 6:01pm I actually like that one as a commuter jacket. Thanks.
Permalink Reply by yogi on May 10, 2012 at 6:34pm personally; I like a wind and water proof jacket on the outside to keep off the wind chill factor and wet. The only bike thing to remember is the tail or over bum part is sometimes longer for bike riding because of your slightly forward stance on the bike and the spit up from the road. .
and 'gore tex' is great and its same product copies. it hurts when you fall... as all of these jackets have a price premium. I know you can find these for about 60 to 100 bucks for a good shell. Action Sports, that is Solomon's outlet brand Their version of GoreTex in Entrante' .
you should not be looking for a jacket to be your all in one solution but part of the layer on layer method, with the windproof on the outside of course.

I wore this one in London when it was snowing. I find it a little too hot here, but maybe not in the west.
Grand total of £12.99!

long sleeve t-shirt, short sleeve tshirt, flanno and hoodie and if it is in the minus a bandana around the face (and ears)
