There's a bunch of cyclists heading across WA on a course which will take them from Fremantle to Sydney Opera House via a circuitous route including some of the hardest climbs in the Australian Alps.

You can follow their progress here:

Great event, and that tracing site is awesome. Bookmarked.

I reckon the first half of day one would be fun, not sure about the rest of it...

There's a whole lot of live streaming videos and other content on the Indian Pacific Wheel Race Facebook page too.  The weather is not currently kind to them.  You can also find out that various riders' spot tags seemed to be turned off.  There's a lot of attention on one chap, Durian Rider, whose tag hasn't been updating for quite some while ...

he announced he's out of the event 1 hour after your post

Somehow not surprised.

Now now ..... :-)

The cops pulled over the Greek rider Vasiliki Voutzali, and made her totally unpack her bike, while they looked for drugs.

She wrote that the cops slowed her down by one hour. She initially thought that the cops were tailing her to keep her safe from the traffic.

Several of the comments that followed her post basically said, if she though that the WA cops were bad ... just wait 'till she gets to Sydney, where the cops hate cyclists.

I'm starting a tour tomorrow. I should be sleeping now but when I close my eyes, all I'm seeing are little coloured dots, moving at a glacial speed. While that keeps happening, I might as well stay up and watch the real coloured dots.

I've really enjoyed the last two days staring at the coloured dots. I might have to buy a packet of chocolate freckles tomorrow ... so that I don't have to go cold turkey.

sounds like another illegal stop, in yet another case of police harassment.

Unreal. less than 48 hours into it and the leaders are at around 1,100kms ........

Yeh, I couldn't imagine myself doing more than 250 a day, probably less.

And a lot of those K's were in bad weather.

Sarah Hammond ahead of most of the boys

Yep, their nether regions would be pretty sandpapered already!

Sarah Hammond and a couple of the other women riders could do fantastically well.

It will be great to watch it unfold over the coming days.

I simply cannot imagine the Back Of Falls Creek on one of those bikes with 4,500kms in my legs .........

OTOH, to climb WTF Hill at all requires a few thousand practice km in the legs so, if they are still going by then, they'll ace that climb. ;-)

True, and if their sleep deprivation continues, by WTF Corner, they may not even remember it. Like the goldfish on the O'Briens commercial - "Oh gee, this is a steep little hill ...... Oh gee, this is a steep little hill ...... repeat ad nauseum ..."
