Best and safest way to get from Hunters Hill to Alexandria

Folks I have convinced a non riding buddy to get on board -- he lives in Hunters Hill near St Josephs school and works just off Botany Road near Gardeners Road - I am lending him an old hybrid commuter bike till he gets the feel for it and he will then hopefully purchase his own.

I am not an inner city rider and was looking for the best route from end of Victoria road to Bourke Road that will keep him safe , happy and mostly convert him.

Look forward to any tips we are doing a trial run this Saturday morning .

Have you had a look at http://www.ridethecity.com/sydney#  ?

However I would go a slightly different route

Over Gladesville Bridge, along Victoria rd, turn right, around the bay.

Up to Sydney Uni, through to Wilson St,

Left to Redfern Station,

Right along George St

Thanks Paul-- much easier map to follow then City of Sydney cycle maps--
Use the Direct Route option of ridethecity - don't go into the city - go via Johnstons Creek and RPA.
It is nice to see that the hard work in mapping cycle routes and shared use paths in Open Street Map has paid off. (ridethecity.com uses this data) In theory it would be possible to make a nice printed version of the same data (it's free after all), but I haven't seen a good printed version yet.

I often do bicycle deliveries that involve going from the city to St. Peters, Marrickvillen belmore, burwood and return. I was driving the run for a while but inner west traffic sucks and it turns out the loop is consistently at least 20minutes quicker by bicycle (outside of peak times).

On the way back (when i don't have the burwood) i always use the cooks river cycleway (just off burwoood road), i get off it at the marrickville golf course, zig zag for a couple of blocks then follow the train lines, there are some shared paths that are bumpy but very enjoyable for me. After the shared path that goes past marrickville station, i turn left on myrtle street and take the 1st right to meeks rd, the firs right then is a lane way that takes you to maud lane. I follow that to marrickville road, quick right, quick left to sydney street, at sydenham road, quick right, quick left to cadogan street, then turn right at saywell street and use the sydney steel road pedestrian and cyclist thoroughfare. From there you can take some newtown/erskineville/alexandria back streets to bourke rd. there are a couple of bad spots like crossing mcevoy. but it is a good ride.

Zig zags are good and  finding side streets with traffic lights can help you get across main roads, they can also provide you with an opportunity to ride a main road with a mostly clear run until you turn into the nearest side street.

Good luck, i love riding out there.

If all else fails catch the train to mcdonald town or something.

I do this ride every day, both ways. (Well, actually my start and end points are about 200m from where you suggest, but the point holds). Here's my route! http://g.co/maps/dc8db

Other than that, George street is fine through Redfern, but more out of your way, and not as nice. This is a really pleasant ride, the only streets you will see cars overtaking you are Ross street (for about 150m) and Maddox St. Hardly any hills either. There's a bit of one-way sneakyness (it's a "shared pedestrian and cars street" though) for 50m on queen street.

90% of this ride is on marked bike routes too. Let me know how you go and any feedback anyone has! I ride it most days, so if anyone has any improvements...

thanks everyone I just had to see a client down that way so did some investigating-- bike path to the end of Bowden street then Gavs or Paul way look best from there -- but experimnerting will be half the fun for this guy once I have him hooked!!
