Sydney Cyclist

Cycling in Sydney Australia

Hello All,
I'm getting rather tired of hearing naysayers stating that they never see any bikes on Bourke Street.
Today I rode from Bondi Jungle to the Opera House and decided to make sure I did as much of of the trip as possible via Bourke Street.
I propose that cyclists should start to use this wonderful route (regardless of treatment, its a great link from Alexandria and beyond to the city).
Let's inhabit it, swamp it, make it a grand cycling focus point. Pull up out front of the businesses that are complaining about lost trade and make a point of supporting them.
I have seen people on fixies pulling great moves in the flat area where Bourke crosses Oxford.
I think cyclists should try to have a strong positive rallying presence here.
I know its a mess right now, but I think if we don't use it we'll lose it, and it could become to the cycling community what Oxford Street is/was to the gay community.

When I rode on it yesterday there were some small posters on the barricades (near St Catherines) saying cycleway opening in next few weeks. Perhaps they have been there for months, I wonder if Clover will have a street party...might find out.
Talking to the Bourke st Bakery people they were saying the intersection there is not going to be worked on until next year . So I think it will be a mess around there for a while yet.
Nikki I doubt that there will be a street party. However, it's given me an idea, perhaps when it does finally open Sydney Cyclist should have a celebration there to show the businesses that there are lots of cyclists who do appreciate the cycleway and that there are lots of us.
Yeah I reckon :) A parade from one end to the other, and a muffin at the Toby's Estate cafe in Cathedral St W'l'm'loo.
Paddington has a street style fair (well kind of) during Fashion week they get the residents to have garage sales and all the stores have sale bins out the front. It really brings in extra people to the area and creates a party type atmosphere. A similar idea for Bourke st could be applied.

The Woolloomooloo festival on wheels this weekend is a great idea that will show off their area really well and bring people to them.
I want to get all excited about this official opening but I'm thinking it'll be in the next two weeks while I'm laid up :-(
Mmmm, muffins & caffeine in the 'loo
We're going for a ride along Bourke Street this weekend for this very reason.
While encouraging use is a very good idea there are problems if new cyclists get out on it now. It is not finished and won't be for a least 6, maybe more months.

Bourke St from Woolloomooloo Bay to William is usable (although maybe not officially opened as the traffic lights at Catherdral still have the Bike lights covered).

Bourke St from William to Taylor Sq still very much a building site with section south of Stanley not even dug up yet.

Bourke St from Taylor Sq to Albion "finished" but blocked with barriers

Bourke St from Albion to Foveaux is one way northways so you may have to detour via Crown if going south

Bourke St from Foveaux to Devonshire - some construction, some usable as before but changes from week to week

Bourke St from Devonshire to Cleveland - cycle path open (I think might not get all the way to devonshire)

Bourke St from Cleveland to Phillip / Crescent - mess, construction, some oneway some two, some old path usable, otherwise go with traffic southways or footpath northwards or Crown st

Bourke St from Phillip / Crescent to Wyndham (Bourke Rd) - nothing , become a car

Bourke Road from Wyndham to Gardeners - cyclepath

So quite a mess and might be very off putting for newer cyclists

This changes on week by week basis as the construction zones move
I rode it from Taylor Square to then end at the finger wharf. Wanted to get from here to the harbour bridge, but couldn't find a way through Botanic Gardens. Had to back track up to the Art Gallery and through the Domain. A link from Bourke St northern end to Cahill expressway footpath would be great.

Thought it was pretty good overall, but would proably find it faster for me to take Macquarie, College and Oxford streets next time. Will have to check out the are south of Taylor Sq too.
Yes much better to stay on the ridge line from taylor Sq, along Oxford then north on College especially with path being build along Hyde Park. The cliff line (stairs) and gardens (bike not allowed) make access from Woolloomooloo Bay to city difficult and not direct
Hmmmm, thats what I said a few weeks ago and was told that really the lower bit from oxford down is only for "street scape" I also ride oxford. its logical to stay on the ridge. But then I also ride Crown , not Bourke for the same reason. I can't see that with all of this research that we are being told took place that the Paths are where they are. Did they consult cyclist who do actually commute to the city or did Clover just go for a ride and think "oh this is nice"??
