Sydney Cyclist

Cycling in Sydney Australia

I had an interesting thought this morning and I hope to gather some stats to form it up a little.

It goes something like this, petrol is almost completely imported as such it adds negatively to our balance of payments and overall fiscal stability globally.

So if we can work out the average cost to import a litre of petrol and work out the average number of litres saved by the number of estimated cycle trips, we effectively have case for cycling's economic value at a federal level.

Don't worry about your post size, Mike, it's good to read your thoughts and you've brought a completely different perspective with you so that's great for healthy discussion.

I worry that 'industry' is getting a lot of blame for inefficiencies. It feels a lot like a way to shift responsibility. (Not accusing you in particular, Mike, but people in general). Industry is driven by demand, our demand. The motoring industry, for example, is probably causing a huge amount of waste (in terms of fuels, resources, and energies), but we can't just blame 'the industry', because it's our dependance on the cars that causes that.
