Cycling in Sydney Australia
Looking for a night out between Christmas and New Year? Come and experience a fabulous night of track racing at our local velodrome courtesy of Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club.
A big crowd attended the event last year and witnessed a magical mix of top-level track cycling competition and excellent funk music from 10 piece band Bump City, specialty Czech beer from sponsor Bakalar Lager and food from a range of popular trucks. Brad McGee, former Tour de France leader and Olympic Gold Medallist, and Sean Eadie, also a former Olympic medallist and World Champion were interviewed and signed autographs for fans.
This year the event will have a similar format with a number of cycling celebrities dropping in during their Sydney Christmas break. Race promoter Paul “Crafty” Craft will explain the races and interview the celebrities. Racing includes the Two Monkeys Wheel Race and two exciting madison events, where the cyclists race in a relay and fling each other into the action.
Spectating at track cycling is going through a massive resurgence in Europe, where the fast-paced racing is mixed with off-track entertainment to create a carnival atmosphere. Don’t miss out on this local opportunity to see why this sport is becoming so popular.
Racing starts at 6pm. We hope you will be able to join us - tickets via Eventbrite for $10 plus fee or $15 on the night.
Having had a couple of tandems, and drag raced our kids to keep them entertained on our bike tours, I've always wanted to see some real tandem racing. Does it still happen?
It does happen - mostly just for para-cycling athletes now. I have seen a tandem in a regular scratch race out at Dunc Gray.
However, not on the event list for the Christmas Carnivals on this occasion.
The madison is pretty good though!
We found our "races" to be a lot of fun, and it was just like Mack trucks going at speed.
I races at Eastern Creek a few years back and the bunch agreed to let a tandem race alongside us. Huge mistake.
It was tandem versus the rest of the bunch, with the bunch coming off second best. Not even close - in hindsight how anyone single rider thought they could out sprint two riders...
We've got a few special guests and events planned for the night.
Two up and coming Malaysian track riders are over in Australia for the Christmas Carnivals and will be at Tempe. One of them has been selected for the national team that will ride on the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games in March.
Mike Tomalaris will be there (after he has read the SBS News) and Antony Green might run the numbers for us.
The weather is looking great. Hope to see some SC people there!
Tickets available online at a discount until tomorrow morning or $15 on the door.
