Nice idea.  I would be concerned about people with colour-blindness, especially red-green confusion which is very common.  I think that these people just rely on the order of the lights rather than the colour.

Yes, that would be the main problem.

I find that the red and green lights used in traffic lights are easy enough to tell apart. The contrast and brightness of the lights make it pretty easy.

Good in pubs, orange means its your turn to buy the drinks ;)

Saw count down signals in Moscow. 3 minutes was the standard time for pedestrians to wait. Amazingly the drivers all stopped, which was just as well because to cross the 8 lane streets otherwise was impossible.

Could give this a trial at Murray St. Was watching from the pub on corner. Never seen so many glum, bored or annoyed faces waiting for the interminable traffic phases to get round to allowing peds to cross. i think it was only 2 minutes to wait but it seemed much longer. Cyclists got all of 6 seconds, peds slightly longer.

And I bet there's many more pedestrians/cyclists at that intersection than people in cars! Where's the justice?

They have countdown timers in Vietnam too. They definitely make waiting more pleasant, I guess by removing the uncertainty as to when you'll finally get the green.

I imagine the RMS doesn't like them because they worry that pedestrians/cyclists will revolt once they realise just how little time they get.
Likewise in Bangkok! See this video,

From 2006 apparently.

Oh and found one for pedestrians too, which makes for essential viewing.

from 2007 apparently.

Don't worry, we are technologically  not that far behind, just don't look at their Metropolitan Rapid Transit with RFID contactless ticketing system opened in 2004

Still have them, even have them on Phuket now.

I think the point is that it is just a single unit and the array changes pattern & colour. Stacking three of them would defeat the purpose of the neat design.

needs to be low, as in paris signals

doesn't address the basic issue, that signals are there to favour cars

i'd sooner have a four way stop
Would it harm anyone if they banned left and right turns there for motor vehicles? They could get to the casino or further down Pirrama Rd via other streets.

If you had a count down, would you need an orange light?

The orange light tells you that the light will soon go red. So if you have a count down telling you that, what would be the purpose of the orange?
