Sydney Cyclist

Cycling in Sydney Australia

Thought I'd start a positive post for all the new members....

Today, I cycled to two meetings in the city. It was awesome because:

  • I helped alleviate traffic congestion in the city by not taking a taxi
  • I got to the meetings faster because I didn't have to walk on the congested footpaths
  • I arrived at the meeting mentally alert because of the exercise
  • All cars, trucks and buses were courteous during my ride and had no problem with me taking the lane (no, really!)
  • I got to ride in my "normal" clothes to show that this mode of transport is a valid choice for "normal" people

Why is cycling awesome for you?

Because:

  • of the diversity of people who do it, why they do it, how they do it, where they do it, on what they do it
  • you don't need a licence or rego (although you pay the same rate of fuel excise as MV road users...)
  • you don't have to have just the one reason to do it, although one reason is enough
  • there are 3 year olds and 83 year olds who do it
  • it's growing (why else would those who haven't yet had a conversion-while-stuck-in-traffic-on-the-road-to-Damascus experience have a problem with it?)

Because I get to explore and see parts of Sydney I would otherwise never have known to exist.

Because, on my heavy Dutch bike with panniers (between me and all my Stuff, I can be pushing 100kgs up a hill - and I am *not* some kind of Cadel-in-training!), I still keep pace with traffic on Victoria Rd in peak hour, enjoy the morning sunshine, smile at people's dogs, arrive at work in half the time it'd take me on the bus AND then don't have to go to the gym (and if you like gyms, that's fine, but they make me want to lose the will to live - and over a certain age one must Do Something to try and avoid becoming a non-communicable disease statistic).

Oh, and I met my boyf cycling. 'Nuff said. :-)

Aww :-)

+1

Because cyclists are such great people and we all get to spend all day chatting on this site instead of working. ;-)

Oh, and because the occasional bike ride is fun.

Oh, and I met my wife through cycling. I am required to mention that. SWMBO.

Somewhat positive post for all the old members...

I cycled:

  • because I can't afford a car that's not going to break down on me every month,
  • because it's my excuse not to take a shower in the morning at home, wasting money on electric and water, instead I shower at work.
  • "Because cyclists are such great people and we all get to spend all day chatting on this site instead of working. ;-)" Neil Alexander

Because it just is

  • I can wear heels to work and arrive without sore feet
  • I can enjoy the simple pleasures e.g. wind/sun on my face, changing weather, yummy smells emanating from cafés, leafy back streets, quiet commute etc
  • Travelling door to door and not having to look or pay for parking
  • Able to express myself through my bike- colourful flowers on baskets anyone!
  • When pregnant I can get around easily without aching feet and cankles
  • I was able to maintain my fitness when pregnant which really helped with a marathon labour
  • I can buy that little bit extra at the shops when I'm riding rather than walking
  • I feel like I'm in a classic French film when I'm riding home from the markets with a baguette and flowers in my basket
  • I don't have to pay for a gym membership, incidental exercise rocks!
  • It's a quick and easy way to get around
  • No guilt factor
  • Satisfaction of getting where I'm going under my own steam

I could go on and on!

There are several arguments in this post that I'll use the next time my wife frets about my safety on my commute.

(No, not the one's about heels and pregnancy...)

There's a film in that description Dasher! Thank you
