You mean cyclists are not liked by bogans?

Say it isn't so!

Good to see a fair and even discussion!

I just posted a comment to them regarding the piece, essentially saying that they are very irresponsible for presenting such an emotive and one sided piece about a topic that is in itself emotive and could very well cause life threatening responses from drivers towards law abiding citizens on bicycles.

Go to this link and look for the story "Cycle friendly" on Feb 4th. Here is a quick transcript I made:

Idiot #1: These people are a danger, a menace on the roads, alot of them. They're arrogant, they ignore the road rules, they put motorists in dangerous position. You know what they are arguing now, that all bicyclies should be treated exactly the same as cars. Well ok then. Pay registration, get a license and be accountable for the stupid things you do on the road.

David Koch: I suppose a cyclist would say they, in some instances, are a menace because they don't have the facilities

Idiot #2: Well good. Ride around the park, catch public transport to work and get off the roads. David, you and I live in the same city. You know that right up the guts of the most busy road in Sydney is a cycle lane. Was once a 4 lane road for cars and is now a 2 lane road for cars with cycleways in each direction. And instead what we have is traffic jams that go on forever and cycle lanes that look lovely which nobody uses.

Does anyone have any idea which road Idiot #2 is talking about in Sydney?

Epping Rd was narrowed when a cycle lane was added, but that lane was added on the side, not right up the middle. Also there was a 4-5 lane tunnel built underneath Epping Rd to compensate the poor motorists for giving up one lane on the surface....

The best solution for Idiot #2 to avoid the traffic jam is to buy a bike.

The way I understand it (and I don't live their so I'm not well up on the issues, so correct me if I'm wrong...):

Epping Road was one of the most formidable examples of "divide and rule" I've seen.

The road wasn't narrowed to create bike lanes ... the bike lanes were the excuse to narrow the road so that people would be forced into paying the toll in the tunnel...

Instead of being angry about the tunnel toll and the public/private deals that the state govt does, they direct their anger at cyclists...

There is a 24 hour bus lane on each side of the road now, which is where two of the lanes went. The Cyclepath uses what used to be another road lane in the short section between Lane Cove Shops and Moore St. The rest of the path was built on what used to be a narrow footpath, but was widened by excavating into rock and building a platform hanging out over a ledge (between Sam Johnson Way and the Shell Station).

Actually the extra 2 car lanes were converted into bus lanes.

Guys, seriously, stop buying into this bullshit. It's only there to get a reaction. It's as valid as QLD farmers arguing about daylight savings, mums complaining that the supermarkets are to blame for their fat kids, and Alice In Chains 'evil rock music' being blamed for some teenage suicide in the 90s.

True to a degree Kylie, the issue to me is that aside from breaching the broadcasting code of conduct (section 4.3). Channel 7 are in effect promoting hate speech about cycling.
The effect of a one side rant like this can only be guessed at but I can easily see it bedding in the impression that bicycles have no legal right to be on the roads and prompting more road rage.
All in all it's one of the most irresponsible pieces of journalism I've seen in some time.

Yeah I do agree with you on that, David. I hope that you get a response from Channel 7. Imagine if you swapped the word "cyclist" for "muslim" and spat that much hatred on tv. You'd be in a bit of trouble there methinks.
