Sydney Cyclist

Cycling in Sydney Australia

Hi All,

I'm about to purchase my first bike and i'm not sure which to choose. I have previously cycled my friends road for over a year and think its time to get my own. I'm looking between 2x models:

1) Merida Road Juliet 901-COM Road Bike

2) Trek 1.2 Womens or Trek Lexa S (which is a 2011 model and more expensive than a Trek 1.2 Womens)

I'm honestly not sure which one is best. I definitely like the Juliet's colours as its really a girls bike :) I believe the spec a very similar so now i'm stuck with what to choose. I plan on training up for the Gong ride in November and would like to participate in more of such rides. Not too sure yet about commuting to work but it's definitely on the table to consideration.

If anyone could provide with any tips, suggestions or feedback it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

My own experience was to start with a Shimano Tiagra equipped bike, and I am still regretting not shelling out for a 105 groupset at the first go.

However, to stay in that price bracket, I would go with the Merida which is Sora equipped.
(I would take the trendier colors of the EMC, but only if it was at least Soras groupset )

Hi Serene,

Test ride both of them and see which one feels the most comfortable... that's the most important thing.

You should also contemplate taking part in the free 'Cycling in the City courses offered by City of Sydney, they're great for building your confidence and skills on the streets of Sydney. Many people who have done the course have been in a similar position to you.

All the best and look forward to seeing you on the road!
Hi Peter, yes i was looking at the Merida which Sora equip. I'm going down on Thursday to take a look and try it out!

Thanks for the course info will definitely look into take up one of the courses!
If you like the color scheme don't forget to verify if the EMC2 2011 version has the Sora group set as well

The page does say it has Shimano Sora components. The shop is in Manly to see if you can test ride it for comfort.
I have the Merida Juliet Road bike and love it!!
Hi All,
Thanks for your all recommendations and feedback. I have just put my deposit for a Merida Juliet Road Bike. So excited! :)
Thank you for the update.
Good luck with Syd-Gong and the $250 fund raising.
Hi All,

Just wanna say I did the Cyclying in the City Course by City of Sydney and it was fantastic! Highly Recommended! I did both the Bicycle Maintance and Riding with Confidance! I now know more about taking care of my bicycle and also much more confidant and aware when riding to work! Best of all the courses were FREE!
Hi Serene,

Glad you enjoyed both our courses, I remember meeting you on the Sunday. At the time I didn't connect you with this thread on Sydney Cyclist!

I also hear you cycled to the Greenway festival which is great! Keep on rolling and let us know how you go!

All the best, Jo
Hi Jo,
I really found the course helpful and also made some good friends. I cycled with Sophie and Ben last Sunday from their house in Mascot to Woolloomooloo and I also did the green way too on Saturday and saw Chloe.

Sophie and I also joined up for Ride to the Gong in Nov. Unfortunately we couldn't convince her son Ben.
Thanks again to you and Patrick! :)

Cheers,
Serene
good choice
