Sydney Cyclist

Cycling in Sydney Australia

Hey guys,

This is my first post on Sydney Cyclist, I have been posting on BikeForums.net all year.

I received an Azzurri Torino 09 (tiagra road) for my 21st birthday (August 09) and have been riding approx 3 times per week on the M7. I enter at Quakers road and have built up my distance all the way to the M5 (Camden Valley Way). Approx 71km round trip.

My question is how is riding after the M5 starts, is there a bike path for the M5, is there any other bike paths nearby. I say this as I have ridden up to the set of light on the M7 but not travelled any further, but am thinking of increasing my distance a bit more as I want to complete a metric century by the end of the year.

There is a cycleway beside the M5 from Salt Pan Creek to Bexley North. It's very rough in parts (dirt road, broken up bitumen), narrow, hard to follow, and has numerous busy road crossings (worst is King Georges Rd). This bikely route Yagoona to Botany Bay Via M5 Cycleway shows it.

From Prestons to Salt Pan Creek, there is no cycleway - only option is the motorway road shoulder. And you can't easily get from the M5 onto the Salt Pan Creek start of the off-motorway cycleway.

Finding the M7 to M5 exit isn't easy when eastbound, nor is finding the M7 cycleway exit obvious when westbound. See this bikely route Condell Park to Kings Park .

There is no cycleway from Bexley North to the Cooks River - have to take to the back-streets. Original RTA M5 proposals were to build a cycleway along Wolli Creek to join up with the Cooks River cyclway - but it never happened. RTA claimed concerns by local environmentalists stopped it.

It's worth noting the RTA has now released plans for an M5 upgrade and is inviting comment on them. Here's your chance to ask that the upgrade to M5 include provision of a separated cycleway to the same standard as the M7.
Thanks Kevin for that detailed response. I will check out those bikely routes and may figure out where to go next :)

Hopefully the M5 gets the same standard as the M7. I love the M7 cycleway; and from the number of people on there I can see that it would be popular to emulate the path on other major arterial roads.

Thanks again,

Chris.
Also the m7 cycleway was funded by fed dollars not state
