Cycling in Sydney Australia

I've wanted to attempt a climb up the the hill to Blaxland at the end of the M4 for a while. I was wondering if anyone else has attempted it & if they can advise me on the road conditions, Traffic, safety along the route.

Fair call. if uber steep is what you want thats the place!

...if you rode OBR early on a Sunday morning, it would be reasonably cycle friendly because the bogans are not out of bed then...

No - they're on their way home!

Some notes from the greens on Penrith council attempting to keep the Mitchell pass as a cycleway last november.

It didn't get up...

Council motion on Mitchell's pass

but the usual talk of a alternative

Mayor happy to consider cycleway (and also happy to reject it)

That motion was never going to get anywhere due to the funding issues associated with the work done to reopen the road.

The Leonay proposal has been conspicuously absent from any discussions, and anyway it isn't a very good alternative as far as being a commuting route - the whole point really.

The old (original) railway route would work but for the expense in building it and maintaining it ie the tunnel would need lighting, security patrolling, would always be wet etc.

This particular part of the trip up the hill is in need of some advocacy action, but there just never seems to be enough momentum to get serious discussion going. Once you get up the escarpment there is good riding to be had - both on and off road.

I'd take OBR over Lappo Hill any day! Even though OBR has no shoulder to speak of, and a steep steepness of steepnessing, cars are crawling up anyway and in all the time I've been riding up it everyone has given me a wide berth. My quads are screaming murder at the top though.

A few proposals have been put forward regarding a safe commuting route up from Emu Plains, but nothing will EVER get done. Council apparently have no money and it is just too hard. A counter flow lane up Mitchell's was brought up but was poo-poo'd almost immediately as having no room on the road. Some bright spark even suggested painting a green lane up the side, with only the white border line to stop cars cleaning up whoever was on the "bike lane". I shall let you guess which side of the debate they were on..

Leonay was always just a bit of shit thrown to those who asked the question so it seemed like council cared.

At a meeting I attended, one old guy said "Catch the train up you stupid people and ride from Blaxland." When I replied with "Ta, but I want to ride the whole way", he replied with a very soothing "Well it's your own fault if you get killed." At least he acknowledged that cyclists lives are at risk (albeit my own fault).

PaulJ, good to see you've been on BMORC.

As it happens there are commuters who use Lapstone Hill. I met one when I was in Blaxland on my way to visit a friend of mine in Springwood.  The rider I met may be one of the guys mentioned in this article http://parramatta-advertiser.whereilive.com.au/news/story/cycling-t...
