Cycling in Sydney Australia
Great news today - the ramp for the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is going to be built next year: https://bicyclensw.org.au/shb-ramp/
Yes, it is long overdue and it isn't a link all the way up to Falcon St and on to the path along the highway, but it is a positive news story never the less.
Project overview here: https://vimeo.com/spatialau/review/193102987/edee10d505
Skip to 50 seconds for news on elveators for the pedestrian side and description of improved access on both north and south approaches.
With Wilson St, Lilyfield Rd, the SHB, infrastructure is again starting to be spread out to increase CBD access. Looks like a bit of a shift in priorities from Transport and Roads.
What was the reasons stated for the objections?
Degrading the view of the bridge. North Sydney mayor Jilly Gibson also confounded the project with unworkable suggestions such as bridge car lanes converted to bike lanes in the distant future and the option of lift.Just vote buying NIMBYism.
Such a crap thing to do. Vote her out if possible!
Well perhaps the solution is to add tack two car lanes on the western side to cater for those who won't be riding due to the poor access to the bridge
So, if someone was to fall while attempting to take their bike up or down the bike steps, could the council be held responsible? Has any "professionals" advised that the current access is dangerous?
I think RMS has ownership of the cycle way. Never heard of anyone taking legal action here.
about time! now it justifies buying a harry vs larry bullitt! bring it on!
Sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but this was announced about 2 years ago when Duncan Gay was the Transport Minister, as part Harbour Bridge improvements worth $30 million. The toll booths at the southern end have been removed, repaved, restriped, and fully completed. But the cycling improvements have not proceded one tiny bit at either end, despite the announcements. Some locals have objected to the northern ramp, but it doesn't explain the lack of any progress at the southern end?
As Edward says...
The promise, http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/projects/sydney-inner/sydney-harbour-brid...
noting that the the page includes a heading that says "What happens next?", and we answer "nothing, as usual from this bicycle hating government" ,
https://bicyclensw.org.au/sydney-harbour-bridge-ramp-delayed-again/ , and
but the good news is that the pedestrian lifts on the eastern side are nearing completion, obviously no resident objections for those, so to avoid the stairs all you need to do is use the lift, walk your bike the length of the bridge and use the other lift, don't know what these cyclists are complaining about?
Might be an option, and ride walk across as a bit of a protest.
See page 3 of this, RMS now talking elevator and travellator options!! https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/projects/sydney-inner/sydney-h...
Preferred option to be displayed this year.Whole thing likely to be reassessed if Liberal govt turfed out in March.
How can elevators / travellator cost less then a ramp?
Another cunning plan to have costs blow outs and make the cyclists look to be a demanding lot?
Plus to delay this for a couple more govt changes?
