Sydney Cyclist

Cycling in Sydney Australia

The "Super Tuesday" bike count is happening again on Tue 2nd March, 2010.

For your involvement you get a T-shirt and $50 donation is made to the Bicycle User Group (BUG) or club of your choosing.

Like many, I had reservations about participating again because of the fear that, as occurred last year, the count data wouldn't be published.  So, I called Bicycle Victoria's Mike Williamson (organiser of the count) directly. He assures me that the concern about access to the data has been heard and that the situation will be much improved this year.  His words (which are now on the website):

"In 2010 it is our intention to make the count data available publicly via the Bicycle Victoria website (although some councils may wish for their data to remain confidential). It would be ideal if councils concurrently provide access to this data via their own websites."

If you're interested (and just in case the links in the flyer below don't carry through) more details here and a step-by-step guide to registration here.

Super Tuesday 2010

Registration Opens Friday 5 February at 9am!

Registration for volunteers to act as counters for Super Tuesday 2010 is fast approaching!

The registration link is on the Super Tuesday 2010 web page.

Interest in counting this year this year is high!  Make sure you get your preferred location, as it's first in best dressed!

Our step by step guide provides full instructions for registration and the count process.

In 2010 it is our intention to make the count data available publicly via the Bicycle Victoria website (although some councils may wish for their data to remain confidential). It would be ideal if councils
concurrently provide access to this data via their own websites.  This
will  help organisations and agencies to work collaboratively in the
development of bike facilities and infrastructure.

Yeah I was thinking about that last night. I would hope they'd take that into account but no idea how.

"I got filmed hopping onto the Harbour Bridge by some guys in suits with very fancy looking camera gear "

Sounds to me like you've been captured by the oil lobby. The government have now put a big red spot next to your name as a non-conformist and a threat to their evil fuel tax scheming ;-)

But yeah, you might be right, the count may have got some publicity. Let's hope it's the good type, not the usual type.

Yeah, I got filmed too. They asked the guy behind me if he would ride up the ramp for them! I guess they thought that me with my panniers was an impossible task, which is probably right. As I wheel my bike up/down the ramp, I noticed that there is only a very small clearance between the bottom bracket and the ground. If you get the pedal stroke wrong going up the ramp it could get messy.

I passed the usual guy on the recumbent bike as I was half way over the bridge, and he usually rides down the ramp (feet on ground), so I suppose they were still there to film that!

It was pretty quiet on the way in this morning though. I think the weather forecast may have made many people chicken out. I got into work and there were only 5 bikes there. Usually there are about 15.

Not sure if you counted me at Berry/Miller St. I didn't see anyone there, but I was counted up at West St at the roundabout coming off the freeway (though I came up from Flat Rock Gully)

I'm pretty sure I would have counted you - I was sitting on some sculpture thingamagig outside the "drink better wine" shop (an excellent shop if you were wondering - last time I went I ordered the dish "7 types of cheeses" mmmm so much cheese) anyways back on topic - I was a fair bit off to the side so I guess that is why you didn't see me...

Only 30 for me at Briens Rd, Northmead.
3 of them female
1 helmetless
2 folding bikes.............
most before 8am (I went with 30 min bands)
yep I was a bit bored...............

For some reason I was expecting more people to use that path.

Bike Queensland reported only 25 - 30% of usual numbers today, being the second day of rain.

It seems Queenslanders are a little soft, mine has been the only bike in the rack for the last two days.

You're being modest Damian - you must be gutsy, rather than they are soft. I heard on the news this morning that motorists (in Queensland) were being advised to only make essential journeys because there was so much water on the roads. Probably depended a bit exactly where you are though.

It's not *that* bad. I did find myself in 5m of 15cm puddle this morning but it's not like that everywhere.

Changing a tyre at the side of the road today wasn't fun though, nor was dropping my keys in the stormwater drain at work.... ahh well (the helpful facilities team here fished them out for me).

As for motorists, there are a lot more cars on the road when it rains. I don't think anyone is heeding the advice on the radio.

tut tut Damian. As the moderator of this forum I expect you to use the available formatting tools, rather than get sucked into *this* business ;-)
