Bike riding on our city streets has increased dramatically in the last few months...

In September, more than 1,700 bike riders used the King and Kent Street intersection during our 6-hour counting period - that's a 150% increase since last month.

More than 500 bike riders used this intersection in the busiest hour.

Other highly used intersections include Park and College Streets with around 1,700 bike riders in the 6-hour counting period and Union Street which clocked up 1,400 bike riders in the same period.

Our data also reveals that many count locations have doubled in usage since this time last year, with one location coming very close to tripling its numbers.

Some key take-outs

The trend over the last 3 months has seen some very positive increases:

  • More than 1,700 bike riders in the 6-hour counting period at the intersection of King and Kent Streets;
  • Almost 1,700 bike riders in the 6-hour counting period at College and Park Streets;
  • Almost 1,500 bike riders in the 6-hour counting period on the Union Street cycleway;
  • More than 500 bike riders in the busiest hour at the King and Kent Street intersection;
  • More than 450 bike riders in the busiest hour at the College and Park Street intersection;
  • 6 out of the 7 common counting locations have more than doubled in usage since September 2010, with one almost tripling usage.

Best to go year to year rather than month to month - big differences in months - winter - spring etc. The best checks will be those counters on the harbour bridge - anzac pde - anzac bridge. But I think most cyclists know that its increasing. Good to see.
Agree - same month year on year is a much better measure. Takes seasonal variance out of the equation. Based on the racks at work, the numbers plummet in winter.
And I should add, the racks are chockers now.

phark... its definetely noticable with the slightly warmer weather the HUGE increases...

Great to see!
