Take care on Ermington Bay boardwalk,I had a fall due to front wheel slip when wet!

I rode thru PVC numerous times when wet or dry with no probs. But this morning at about 7.15am I rode up to Meadowbank wharf for BN ride start as I was on the way to there,I was at the 2nd bend at boardwalk near Atkins Rd,my front wheel slipped and I fell down and I got carpet burn on my left shoulder, elbow and leg 7cm from my patella and a little cut on my left 2nd top pinkie finger and twisted my left ankle.I looked at the boardwalk for grease or oil but it wasn`t and it is damp from earlier rain.I used my 2nd twin brother "Bad Black 2" which I bought 2 days ago as my "Bad Black 1" is out of action for 1 week for service due to cluster slips.I rode up to start, shrugging of the accident and rode with the group but after the ride.I still got pains on my leg and shoulder due to hill climbing.I rode at slow speed 16kmh when it happened but I think it might be my new tyres of *SMP* that caused it.It was my 1st fall on it.

This pic of where my bike is,it happened about 1 bike length ahead.

Take care at the bends when wet or damp.

*SMP*=Schwalbe Marathon Plus.

*edit*deleted the Parra Valley Cycleway.

                                                           Update alert!!! @ 9.09am,13/02/12

Metal clips was the culprit when wet.

Take care to try not to let your front tyre hit those metal clips while leaning left or right at the bend.

Ouch.  Sorry to hear that David.  I hope you're OK and you didn't further damage that knee that has all the pins holding it together!

Is that the grid that has been painted (or coated) with a sort of gritty finish?  I thought that surface looked as though it was designed to be slip resistant........?!?

Thanks MB,

I`m ok apart from being sore at 7cm below my patella as I checked it with a ruler.I was lucky that my patella didn`t hit it.It is gritty finish that not been painted over when it was opened.I`ve got to take it easy for time being to let it heal in time for Tour de Hills 100km.

When you say the tyres are new, how new are we talking?

Bought over the net last month and not used but fitted 2 days ago when I got another new same bike as I don`t like the Maxxis Detonator tyres that came with it.New tyres might be the reason.I`m thinking of rubbing the new tyres with sandpaper to get the tractions.

What do all think?

Nup I wouldn't do that.  You might find you smoothed the surface out and made it worse.  The new tyres shouldn't be a problem I don't think.

"Brand" new tyres absolutely can be an issue, which is why I asked the question. The rubber is infused with oil which preserves the tyre (which is why they sometimes have that wet or glossy appearance when new).

This dissipates as the tyre is scuffed in on the first ride, but this needs a good dry friction surface like asphalt or concrete.

If its wet, tyres in this brand new state are about as grippy as dogshit on a wet lawn!

This is why motorcyclists sometimes give brand new tyres a quick sanding before riding. Helps avoid dropping a $10K motorcycle.

There ya go, I never knew.  I've actually not done a whole lot of tyre replacing in my years of riding.  I seem to have good luck with the ones I start with.  Just recently put a new pair of Vittoria Rubino Pros on the road bike and my goodness were they tight.  We had four hands yanking on them trying to get them over the rim and still couldn't do it without a pinch.  They seem to have stretched a bit now, thankfully.

Kylie,I had a problems with fitting new SMP and it took me 45 mins to get it in last year. But last Thursday it took me 15 mins. Was told of the tip was to let it warm up first before being put in place.I used oven and leave the door open to heat up the tyres. ;-)

Agree with you,Kylie.

Could be a growth of algae- happens up here on the mountains a lot.

Perfectly grippy concrete becomes slippier than ice, when the green stuff is mooshy. Only has to be a trace.

I expect algae does just as well on that ?steel?walk.

My bike bud Clair suffered a radial fracture on this account.

As John said that it is over the tidal waters.I haven`t seen it being submerged when it is on high tide, even if there`s heavy rain.

And I had a looked, there`s no algae there yet.

Thanks John, sent you pm with my findings. And thank you too for other cyclists behalf for safety.
