Cycling in Sydney Australia
I rode thru PVC numerous times when wet or dry with no probs. But this morning at about 7.15am I rode up to Meadowbank wharf for BN ride start as I was on the way to there,I was at the 2nd bend at boardwalk near Atkins Rd,my front wheel slipped and I fell down and I got carpet burn on my left shoulder, elbow and leg 7cm from my patella and a little cut on my left 2nd top pinkie finger and twisted my left ankle.I looked at the boardwalk for grease or oil but it wasn`t and it is damp from earlier rain.I used my 2nd twin brother "Bad Black 2" which I bought 2 days ago as my "Bad Black 1" is out of action for 1 week for service due to cluster slips.I rode up to start, shrugging of the accident and rode with the group but after the ride.I still got pains on my leg and shoulder due to hill climbing.I rode at slow speed 16kmh when it happened but I think it might be my new tyres of *SMP* that caused it.It was my 1st fall on it.
This pic of where my bike is,it happened about 1 bike length ahead.
Take care at the bends when wet or damp.
*SMP*=Schwalbe Marathon Plus.
*edit*deleted the Parra Valley Cycleway.
Update alert!!! @ 9.09am,13/02/12
Metal clips was the culprit when wet.
Take care to try not to let your front tyre hit those metal clips while leaning left or right at the bend.
ps,I forget to mention that I didn`t leave the pedal down while leaning left as it was on 3 & 9 o`clock position.I never ride while leaning left or right at 6 o`clock position when turning corners or bends on roads.
Permalink Reply by Bob Moore on February 20, 2012 at 8:53am No,JWB is different to EBCB (Ermington Bay Cycleway Boardwalk) as JWB got planks of steel/alloy and EBCB got grids of lightweight alloy coating with texture.
Back to EBCB this afternoon after 8 days of not riding thru this area.I stopped there again to check it out.I poured water from my bidon onto the clips and walked my bike over it at between 75-80degrees leaning left.It sure do slip on the side of my front tyre from the clips,no matter how small is it.
There will be more accidents happening there soon for unwary cyclists.Move the clips away from the centre or install the same texture as grids for the clips.
Permalink Reply by Martin Geliot on February 21, 2012 at 6:30pm FWIW with my fat tyres I couldn't really test the clips.
It was the textured surface which was slippy when wet.
Additionally I couldn't tell whether the material was contaminated or not.
My recommendation is for some proper friction testing to be done, when wet for some time per recent weather patterns.
And of course for riders to slow down on account of the known problem.
We can't reach every rider from SC unfort.

In essence this section is a nature trail which gives access through a vulnerable environment. It's fantastic that council were able to negotiate approval for bike access, travelling slowly through this section is a very small price to pay to have this access continued.
