Corey Johnson, the Speaker of their City Council, tipped to become the next Mayor, is a super proactive cycling / transit / walking advocate. He's been touted for a while in cycling advocacy circles as the next big thing for the USA / NYC. He just pushed through a US$1.7 billion package.

Good point in the article that in NY the Mayor is in charge of DOT, and can introduce a new way of prioritising transport, but if “The Mayor wants to slow walk it, DOT will be happy to oblige”. It’s a bit like Sydney, only the Minister/State Govt  is really in charge. RMS sleeper cells in TfNSW may be only too happy to slow change here, even it was promised.

It will be a powerful signal if new NY Mayor does get his way.
