Audax Riders

Audax rides are non-competitive long distance tours by bicycle, called "randonnees". The challenge of Audax is not in racing, but in riding at your own pace. Rides are open to all reasonably fit riders - non-Audax members are most welcome to join.

I have a Windsor to Denman on April 15. I proposed a ride for Denman to Tamworth, but I feel that has been forgotten and I need to wake someone up.

The return is unspecified, Dabba's ride looks good, but how do I get to Dungog? Is there something that runs parallel to New England Highway from Nundle perhaps?

Certainly my intent Garry, I'm still relatively new so am learning the ways of The Audax :)

I'm certainly conscious and appreciative of the efforts ROs put in, and the fact that we need to have more, even if they only do one ride a year

Nundle > Dungog = about 245k's with lots of gravel (maybe 100k) and lots of hills. I've done this ride, and it was a tough ride. The section from Nundle to Gundy is mostly gravel, and then from Rouchel to about 20k from Singleton is gravel. Not much traffic at the times that I've done it. Camp at Gundy showground if required - see the friendly people in the general store. There's nothing other than farms between Gundy and Singleton.

Other options are ride to Scone and catch train back to Newcastle, or hope that you could catch the Dungog train from Maitland if the Scone one connected.

No box needed for either Scone or Dungog provided that you travel City rail (or whatever the name is today).

Andrew and to lesser extent myself have done ACT rides, winter is especially good, but they do some in the general south-west area, Yass up to Forbes etc but Garry is right regarding needing more RO, just need the inspiration to  configure interesting, safe routes. Victoria has twice the membership so might be expected to have twice the ROs

In a discussion regarding the early almost sold out PBP on a UK forum there was mention of a general increase in Audax worldwide including Asia and 10% membership increase in Audax UK in both the last 2 years whereas ours is declining according to the recent AGM documents. I guess we all have to do our bit to reverse any decline

Probably my biggest issue with being an RO is being able to reconcile my risk appetite with the route conditions.

By that I mean, there are roads that I will happily use at certain times and days, but I wouldn't use at others.

If I'm not comfortable using that road after a certain time, is it "right" for me to schedule a ride at that time, given other riders would have different risk profiles and would (I assume) believe the route is suitable based on the ROs knowledge of this route.

Or am I just overthinking it?

Yes, you’re probably overthinking it.  If you’re comfortable riding the route and would be +/- an hour or two as the route goes on taking into account where faster/slower riders might be, then it should be ok.  Rides are submitted with a route map and the calendar coordinator will have a quick look at the route to make sure there is nothing that should be obviously avoided (as well as check that there aren’t loops in the same direction etc).

Hello Garry, who is the calendar coordinator this year?

I have Windsor to Denman on the calendar for April 15. I'm waiting on April 16 Denman to Tamworth approval. Today I hope to have Tamworth to Singleton ready, thanks to Dabba. Then I am tossing a coin as to whether I travel from Singleton to Newcastle via Dungog as per Dabba's route, or back to Windsor/Parramatta on well worn Audax routes.
