There was a final walkthrough of the Victoria Rd upgrade for cyclists in August. The BTBA/RTA compiled a long list of problems as we saw them. Some (a very few) they agreed to fix. Others they said were to be referred to the RTA for further consideration, or were Leichhardt Council's responsibility. Some were just ignored. Fruitful area for future bike groups to work on! n relation to the bike advisory committee, I reviewed the works schedule and it seems like they are planning to invest a lot of money in advance storage boxes for bikes. I cycled extensively in London where these are all the rage and I can tell you that they are pretty worthless.
Most of the time they cannot be used because cars have stopped in them and the british police would not fine people for stopping in them. The rest of the time they do nothing except encourage cyclists to try and ride to the front. This has led to many of the conflicts between cyclists and trucks, which is a huge problem in London. Typically the cyclist gets half way up the left hand side trying to get to the advance storage box when the lights change colour and the truck turns over the top of the cyclist.
I really don't think that they are worth the money.

The clover paths are great for nervous or novice cyclists, but there are major issues with traffic control lights on them. They're :a) lights are keyed to the pedestrian phases, so you get <30s of green every few minutes, whereas on the road you get the full vehicle green, usually twice as long or more
b) the sensors often fail to detect bikes, leaving you on a red light, which you can choose to jump if you like, but we've seen the cops fining riders for doing so on the Union Street lanes.
I now go round Pyrmont point instead of taking Union Street, they're that painful.
They're OK if you're being funneled from A to B, but not so great for general riding. Oh, and the Surry Hills ones are a hipster walking path, apparently. They're too cool to use the pavement. Asshats.
