In case of someone asking of "Can I ride/get back on bike if I broke a patella?"

Yes, you can ride/get back on your bike 3 months later after doing the physiotherapy. Depending on how do you fared on recuperating but you cannot do 100% before you broke your patella. You will be in…Continue

I still rides in mended broken patella from `08 self accident at Canberra. Nothing deters me from riding more better than walking. What the HTFU guy am I?   :-)

David, I'll join in with you.

I'm learning more and more about knees and how tough knees really are - some from my own experiences, and especially from a bloke like you!

I've ruptured my patella tendon twice (not bike related injuries). The second time I did it the doctors said I would never ride a bike again. It took a lot of very painful physiotherapy to prove them wrong.

Good on you Mark.

Yes I`d agree with you on very painful physiotherapy. I was told that I will be back on bike in 6 mths by my doctor and I got back in 3 mths and it was worst but I did the HTFU and kept on riding. ps,your pic was the same as mine too of the staples the 1st time but on 2nd op to remove the bandwires 7 mths later and it was the disolvable stitches.

I don't have any impressive knee piccies ;~(

I've never suffered a structural knee injury - just had 15 years or so of nagging knee related pains unresolved. Nobody has successfully diagnosed my specific issue, just telling me my knee is not bad enough for surgery.

Finally, several months ago I found a physio who really "gets it" and spotted a couple of real problems in my pelvic alignment and has given my some bizarre glute strengthening exercises to do (among other things).

A good physio and rigorously keeping up with the program is key for me.

It's hard finding time to do all the prescribed exercises, plus general core and leg strength and stretching. If I don't keep it up when my knee is feeling good, it starts falling apart again after a few weeks.

Hopefully I can keep pushing my limits, continue to lose kilos, get fitter and not have the knee photo ;~)

My days of hard core ridings is over due to pains experienced today on BikeNorth Wyong ride. When I got off my bike at Peats Ridge after a long uphill ride and I wast the last rider to arrive, I almost fell over due to no left knee control. I thanked the lady at Peats Ridge cafe who had offered me ice for my knee while we had a rest stop to drink and eat.

In the past I love hill rides and I powered up but today it made my patella worse as it wears out the cartilage and I can`t powered up the hills.. It made cricking noises.

I am no longer participating any future charity rides. From now on I will be only doing easy rides that don`t involve steep hill ascents.

I will be seeing doctor very soon to have it looked at and to have an x-ray to be taken.

Still disappointed and I want a knee replacement as a matter of urgency but I know that it will take a long time due to waiting lists.

Hi Snowy, I know you know of my two knee replacements and I am sorry to hear of what happened to you on the Wyong ride today.  I guess your only choice is total knee replacement now so what is your expected waiting time?

As you know I have ridden for the past nearly 5 years with total knee replacements and have never been happier - including the Audax 130 km option on the Australia Day long weekend last year.

The only thing that stops me riding these days is my job. :-(

Hi Ma Dame Velo, Yes,I know of you about it but you are not the fast rider as me. :)  As you know that I love powering up the hills as you`ve had seen me do it in the past. No more powering up for me as I need to save the wear and tear on the cartilage of my patella.

It`s a bugger to happen today. I haven`t seen my doctor for over 3 years + due to him giving the medications that I don`t want to impede my riding.

I still don`t know of my expected waiting time but I will see my doctor if he is still working at Parramatta medical centre or not. It will be depending on the x-ray findings and be referred to Westmead orthopedic surgeon registrar to let me know at a future date for an appointment to be made to see him.

Will be finding out very soon after on what will he say about it?

I am still riding atm but not hard riding. I got off at Eastwood station to ride home at a relaxing pace and rode around Olympic Park before returning home for a total of 110km today.

Had been to doctor today regarding of my patella x-ray which was taken last Wed. X-rays findings letter is in link below.

Got pain and crepitus, early onset of OA of both knee joints is seen.

Some periosteal new bone formation is noted. Will be seeing Orthopaedic Surgeon at Westmead soon after making an appointment for consultation.

Referral letter to Orthopaedic Surgeon.

I will be riding with BN Footloose in the Foothills to Kurrajong next Tuesday if the weather permits to see if it aggravates my left patella. Done these rides 5 times in the past with no probs. 3 times by myself, once with BN and once with CAMWEST.

Didn`t ride the BN Footloose. Seen the Orthopaedic registrar at hospital today regarding of my knee problems and had been checked. Was told that I`m not ready for knee replacement yet.

They will send me an appt for physio by sms over the coming days. Was told that I need pain killers that I don`t want and haven`t used it for 3+years. Gave me a written letter for my GP to prescribe me the pain killers.

Stuff it and was told in not to do a lot of hill climbings on bike.
