Riding in the park

Centennial Park is a great place to ride whether you're training solo, in a bunch, or just having some fun.

What I didn't understand was why some of the faster cyclists didn't give the park a miss on Sunday. It was very scary watching some of the lycras go speeding like maniacs through a mess of parents, children and everyone else.

I really enjoyed being there but realised you had to be ultra careful esp on the Grand Drive. I had to yell at a guy that was head in iPod and about to walk in front of me - only for his safety of course.

I find it much less hazardous on car free days the trick is to get there early before all the families do that way you can enjoy car free and not have to tangle in with everyone else.

Is brilliant on car free days to watch kids being taught how to ride on the road by their parents, such a great way to learn before they have to go onto roads with traffic.

There was an accident yesterday morning on the car free day, didn't see the accident only the aftermath. 2 cyclists down one make one female with their cycling friends pulled over the check on them and a pedestrian with a pram looking stricken and apologising......so not sure what happened but the ambulance came and helped patch the cyclists up and possibly one got taken away for more treatment.

Can only hope everyone involved was ok.

I went thru Centennial to Moore Park to watch my old soccer team play a semi final. Was fun without the cars, but man there were some kamikaze kids about. I was avoiding kids while some lycra guys were avoiding me moving at a speed probably a little too fast for the day given that there were so many wild kids about. One bunch of kids were doing circles on the road! Not complaining - I was quite enjoying the anarchy really! :>

On the way back just enjoyed taking a few roads thru the center of the park. Doubled back from the kiosk near the duck pond to Lachland swamps road. Coz we could! So much room on the road without the cars, we were unlikely to collide with other bikes.

Car free days are 4 times a year. It is the last Sunday of each season so next one not till last weekend of Spring.

For most info on the park head to their website it's normally got what is happening there eg concerts or closures etc

I have one, love cycling at 30km/hr for an hour with the hills.

Car free day today - just noticed how smooth it is riding in the car lane compared to the bike lane. They really need to do something about that. That warning sign saying we will be fined for doing over 30kph - how can they fine us - we have no speedometers.

I call Centennial Park my rehabilitation clinic. It is a great place to ride after injury. Also riding during the week for some time out. How lucky are we.

Just got my MTB serviced and have realised how bad it was. I would be completely exhausted after 3 laps and give up - I was also only doing 10min laps.

I just did 4 laps on Sat and 6 on Sunday and now im bringing my time down - I did under 10mins a lap as an average for those 6 laps. Woo hoo.
