Bicycle Commuting

All of us who do it know the benefits of getting to work on a bike. You arrive earlier (usually), happier (usually), it's cheaper, it's healthier and it's a great way to get rid of the days stresses.

Some links for bike commuting

bicyclecommute an excellent resource from Sydneycyclist member brooza

CommuteByBike is a blog full of useful tips, it's a bit US centric, but helpful nonetheless.

Some good tips on the Futuremakers blog written by SydneyCyclist member Grant.

BikeBus is a great way to find a group of people riding to work in the same direction.

If you're looking to start bike commuting and have questions, post a question here. We love to give advice.

Geoff,

I can't comment on the best way from Balgowlah to Lilyfield (or whether even the best route goes through Lilyfield). But one route from Lilyfield to Parramatta that I used to use was:

Down the hill to the Bay Run bike path. Round the Cove to Timbrell Park. Cross the road safely and go down Henley Marine Drive along the park.

Turn right up Heath or Augusta to Rickard, where you turn left. At Ingham do the dogleg onto First Avenue, and then cross Great Northern Rd at the lights, onto Queen Rd and go straight for several kms to a few hundred metres before Concord Rd, turn left at Sydney St, and go straight up to Concord Rd. Cross that at the lights, turn left down the footpath for maybe 50 m, cross the M4, then get on it yourself at the ramp from Concord Rd.

Get off the M4 at Homebush, up the exit ramp to the lights, where you turn right. Up Homebush Bay Drive for a short distance, then take the slip lane down to Australia Avenue, and turn left towards the Olympic Park.

Go straight up Australia Avenue, past the brickpit and the carparks. Go straight onto Holker St. Go right onto Newington Rd after the prison, and take the brown bus road (legal for cyclists) up to Silverwater Rd, where you cross the river on the bridge.

You then can go along the path as per your route. However, at Park Rd you have two choices, neither of which are marked on your route (which takes the Vic Rd option). My preference was to go north up Park Rd, all the way to Kissing Pt Rd, turn left, and go down the hill, and over James Ruse Drive, and turn right into Isabella. That gets you to Parramatta, with options at Macarthur St and Brickfield St for accessing Parra.

Going back to Park St, your other option is to head south and clamber over the dismal Thackeray St Bridge, into the Rosehill industrial area. Some of the most unpleasant parts of Sydney, but the traffic is not too bad. You then follow Hassall and Parkes Rd into Parramatta, with variations along the river or quieter roads possible.

I know the 1750 has a further variation on this, at least as far as Concord Bridge. Put "the 1750" into google for their website/blog and route info.

Good luck

Josh

Hi all,

I have been commuting daily from Balgowlah near Manly to Sydney CBD for about 12 years now and have a new job....at Parramatta! I have done this commute once and it took about two hours - including looking at maps a lot. I start there on the 2 August and am looking forward to riding once or twice a week. I can't give up my commute!! Can anyone share a good quick way to get there. This is the route I tool last time but am looking for a better way.
Thanks all
Geoff

We are moving into a new building in a few weeks. Vodafone has relocated there this week, and I was able to get someone to scope out the Bike Parking.

Check it out here

Our company has dedicated use of the secure cage, though I say secure because it does not currently have an actual lock on the gate.
The racks look very nice, but it is a real pity that for a brand new 6-star Green rated building, very little thought has gone into what facilities cyclists actually need other than bike racks.

That sounds like a very dangerous situation redeye, glad to hear you are alright. I've seen trucks lost timber over the top of the cab when braking before, if someone was unfortunate enough to be in the way it would be messy. Did the van stop to retrieve it's load?

It would be a good idea to stay down - in my last crash, I had no intentions of getting up, but some bystander dragged me off the street. Obviously not someone who has done first aid, because you ALWAYS suspect spinal injuries in a crash with a cyclist.

i understand what you mean about the brain not working after an accident. I've since learnt that if you come off your bike due to another person's error, stay down, and get the ambulance called. That way the police come, and take statements, and everything is official.

My dad learnt this the hard way after insisting he was ok after a motorbike accident where a car turned into him. After the event, the car denied responsibility, and legal action ensued. Turned out ok in the end, but could have been avoided if he had of called the ambulance.

thanks for stating the obvious Hartley :-)
the brain stops working normally when you're lying flat on your back in the road, took a little while to settle down actually. Lesson learnt though. No matter what the damage always exchange details.

Oh man that is bad news redeye. Unfortunately you might find yourself out of luck, because it's the responsibility of both parties to exchange information. That said, if you saw the guy again, you could have a chat to him about the damages done. He might agree that it's easier for everyone if a 'cash settlement' is reached? It'd be worth getting a quote from your bike shop as soon as you can. You never know, your hanger might be right to bend back, and even your rear mech could be salvageable.

Glad you're ok mate. Might be worth starting a discussion in the General section on this one, more people will see it and be able to offer advice

You really, should have taken the van's rego, the driver's details and reported this. The bloke driving the van did not have his load secured properly and if I recall correctly this is an offence (not to mention work-cover might be interested!)

I had a bizarre accident this morning.

I was pulling up to a T junction as a white van braked hard as he turned in to the road towards me, I think he saw a pedestrian on the crossing a bit late. He had 4 or 5 large sheets of mdf on the roof which all flew off, skidded along the road like they were on ice, and completely cleaned me up!!! Apart from a bit of bark off my leg all seemed fine, the bike didnt look damaged, i got myself up brushed down - a few motorists got out there cars to make sure i was ok, which was nice.
So it seemed like no harm done so I carried on, only as I continued to ride did I realise my rear mech is damaged and the gear hanger bent - hopefully not the frame.
It could run into a fair bit of cash to sort out and i'm REALLY p*ssed off that i didnt get the vans number.
Should i report to police - is there any point?? I might hang around the junction at the same time over the next few days and see if he comes through again.
