If I remember correctly, I couldn't turn right once I got on the shared path via Chaplin Crescent (Quakers Hill). I couldn't also turn left when I got on via Quakers Hill Parkway, meaning that I couldn't go towards South, could only go towards North for a little while until I hit the blockage mentioned earlier. There are detours in place, I didn't bother following them

Comment by Paul on October 21, 2010 at 4:29pm: I've been in Europe for 2 months and haven't yet been out on the M7 cycleway. Is the big detour just north of Richmond Rd still there?

You can now ride from Quakers Hill towards south, however, there is another detour the moment you ride the bridge over Richmond Road in Glendenning. It is a short detour, clearly marked. Then back on the cycleway, as you close in on the other side of Glendenning near Power road, there is yet again another detour. You end up on the Rooty Hill Road North heading towards Rooty Hill where you can hop on the cycleway again.

Comment by PeterT on October 25, 2010 at 9:46am: I was pretty excited at the prospect of cycling the "the longest lit cycleway" and went for a ride last Thursday evening. Unfamiliar with the area, we drove around and happened to start at Cowpasture Rd, West Hoxton (point 14) . Found there was a large detour northward, we decided not to navigate the suggested detour which will be in place till 2011. So we headed south, which meant 6km (Camden Valley way )

At this stage, it looks like The Horsley Drive (point 23 ) to the point where Tony mentioned (Station St, Rooty Hill ) Point 36 might yield 10kms.

Richmond Road in Glendenning.(point 43 ) to the end of M7 (old Windsor Road) seems to yield a similar distance.

Summary and estimates :
1 - 14 : OPEN (6km) Camden Valley Way, Prestons - Cowpasture Road, West Hoxton
23 - 36 : OPEN (10km) The Horsley Drive, Horsely Park - Station St, Rooty Hill
43 - 62 : OPEN (10km) Richmond Rd, Oakhurst - Old Windsor Road, Glenwood.

Once the works due to be completed in Nov are done, it would mean from point 20 (Elizabeth Drive, Cecil Park ) to 62 (Old Windsor Road, Glenwood) would be open -r a 27km route!

I haven't been down south on the cycleway for quite some time, I think the further I have been recently has been up to the entrance/exit to the motorway from Walgrove Road just after the LG building. I didn't realise that there were plenty of roadworks down there 2. This week end I noticed that the Rooty Hill detour remains in place, however, the cycleway is now open from Sunnyholt Road all the way till the end/beginning (towards North). This wasn't (also) the case a couple of weeks ago, from memory, if I am not confused with so many detours, hehe. The good thing is that some of the repairs are first class. I said from the beginning that the surface was 2nd rate in so many areas. The downside are the funds spent on repairs done on top of repairs, surely the funds could be better utilised (still) in cycling infrastructure some where else.

Comment by Tony Ascenso on November 21, 2010 at 9:27pm: Cycleway access from Eastern Road (near Blacktown Olympic Park) is closed on both sides for at least the last 2 weeks. As I "had" to go down south and it was early on Sunday morning, I turned left at Rooty Hill Road South and cycled till I came across the Great Western Hwy (not very recommended) and then I could hop again on the cycleway for a little while until I hit the Horsley Drive where there is yet another detour in place. This detour is not too bad, you can ride on a largish footpath and only need to cycle on the road for a little while until you can go left or right at another piece of cycleway. I turned right and went towards Fairfield City farm

I find the best info on the M7 work is on the Westlink maps page. They seem to keep this updated regularly as opposed to the general upgrade info page. Just about every week there are new and exciting detours to navigate.
