Slow Bicycle Movement - Sydney

After a bit of pondering (you can't rush these things), I've decided there may be a call for a Sydney chapter of the Slow Bicycle Movement. It may be a bit slow to get going, but to misquote from their manifesto "we'll get there....eventually...."

This is a place to operate at a more relaxed pace. If you're

(a) a new rider;
(b) just a slower rider;
(c) have a bike which won't go fast;
(d) find yourself transporting heavy loads (children or luggage);
(e) have trouble (or don't want to) shift into the large chain-ring;
(f) want to suppress the tendency to travel at ever increasing speeds, even for a few moments...;
(g) or for any other reason at all....

then this is the place for you!

For me it's (g). Because it's about the journey.

If you go too fast you may miss something.

(g) .. its great to explore Sydney by bike. Best done slowly, but you can always up the speed on the way home!

Ironically, the bicycle was once one of the fastest ways to get around. Now it is seen as slow. But is that such a bad thing? In the ever-increasing-speed that this world runs, riding a bicycle at a sedate 9 mph is a wonderful experience. Better still, do it on a vintage bicycle. Cycling slowly through places lets you see so much more that you would other skim over.

I took some friends for a ride over the weekend (before the rain!). We went through some back streets on the lower north shore looking at some old homes and nice views. They were commenting on how cycling allows you to see things in a new perspective because you are moving slowly and can look around. One of the group had never been over the "coat hanger" on a bike (he is from Brisbane) and was absolutely chuffed to bits to be riding over it and taking in the sights. I think our average speed was about 15kph and this aspect was appreciated by all.

Great. I can forget about my heart rate monitor and just relax and enjoy the ride.

This is the kind of therapy I need every now and then.

I better keep clear of the cars, as I often have to dodge them or have to or try to keep up with them.

I've just added a Sydney Olympic Park Meander to the event calendar for Sat Aug 15th....This would almost qualify for a slow ride (I know, I know.....it's taken a while to get one off the ground....)
