Slow Bicycle Movement - Sydney

After a bit of pondering (you can't rush these things), I've decided there may be a call for a Sydney chapter of the Slow Bicycle Movement. It may be a bit slow to get going, but to misquote from their manifesto "we'll get there....eventually...."

See http://theslowbicycle.blogspot.com/.

This is a place to operate at a more relaxed pace. If you're

(a) a new rider;
(b) just a slower rider;
(c) have a bike which won't go fast;
(d) find yourself transporting heavy loads (children or luggage);
(e) have trouble (or don't want to) shift into the large chain-ring;
(f) want to suppress the tendency to travel at ever increasing speeds, even for a few moments...;
(g) or for any other reason at all....

then this is the place for you!

Hi Slow Cyclers! I am definitely a slow cycler having just taken tot he bike after a good 8 year break. I thought some of you slow cyclers might like to come to Fit & Fun Day on 22 November which includes the Big Bike Ride in Callan Park. It's certainly no race and a lovely leisurely cycle through the beautiful parklands perfect for all ages. I've just listed it int he events section.

Riding from the crematorium towards the Yarra Bay Sailing club I noticed that there is a separate path going into the cemetery. I think next time I'll take that turn off and explore. Also I want to see where those market gardens are.

oh - alright. I was a bit loath to put up a pick of myself as it shows why I have a bike....
Anyway I went to SOP today - I didn't realise how amazing that bike infrastructure is. I spent 2 hours meandering around - still didn't see everything and got lost three times. Once I got asked by a lady to pose for photos - she works for SOP - so maybe I'llbe on their website one day.

Stephen,

Trike - VERY COOL! Please post up a photograph of it, better still a picture of your riding it!

I can relate to that fear of falling of. Too many of my peers in the 50+ age group have fallen off and broken hands, shoulders, popped tendons and worse. That's why I opted for a trike. Not much to fall off there.

Hi Everyone, I also wish to report a magnificently slow ride today, albeit rather of necessity. My sister (45) after existing for many years in terror off falling of bikes actually bought a new bike today, a "Townie", which as you may know is a rather difficult kind of bike to fall off. We decided to try riding from the shop to her home (Manly to Cromer - say no more than 10km) which took at least two hours, admittedly with lots of intervals for trepidation. Along the way I told her of the SBM, and Stephan's near overtaking story which raised her spirits quite a lot. We did however leave a few old ladies with walking sticks in the dust (with all due care of course) Cheers, Garry

I had a nice slow ride today. My work based BUG had some cycle training- lots of new people learning cycle skills, I don't think we went over 10km/hr. The main thing was they had a great time!

Well yesterday morning at Centennial park I almost overtook another rider. But then it went downhill and he got away. He wasn't of the lycra brigade so it wouldn't have counted against me I reckon.

Hi - this seems pretty much a group for me. Just getting into riding a bike I am being continually overtaken by other riders.

I bought a copy of a rides around Sydney book. Should look into it for a nice slow riding place. SOP is called cycling nirvana in this book!
