Regarding wind noise. This happens with or without a helmet when the airflow is perpendicular to your ear canal. It is the same effect as the one you get when you blow over the top of a bottle. Helmets may well make this worse but I find at above speeds of 30km/h, helmet or no helmet, it's noisy.
The best way to alleviate this is to turn your head so that the airflow is directly into the canal. I do this when approaching intersections with blind side streets when there is no traffic. It allows me to hear whether there is any traffic likely to be crossing my path. I don't rely on hearing for traffic behind me so much. Obviously you can't keep your head turned 90 degrees for long! :)

ar the engine or see their light beams and so I check the mirror to measure how close they are to me and my bike and thus make a decision of invade the door zone and risk being doored, or taking the lane. Going on a straight line is the least you can do. If you feel the danger building up around you it helps to look backwards to say not only that you saw them but that it's a human riding the bike (some drivers think it's just a bunch of metal with wheels, hehe). I don't think you can make eye contact through the mirror (the driver will not notice you are looking at them through the mirror, I think). When there is no space for the car to safely pass me, I think it pays to take the whole lane and hang in there even if lights blink on you. Even if they honk and yell at you, I think it pays to take the whole lane if there is someone dangerously riding close to you on parts of the road where there is no room for a save overtake. I don't like mirrors on my helmet because the view is bad and because you have to focus your eyesight too close compared to what you should be paying attention to on the road. I don't think that drivers notice my mirror at all. In order to be seen I believe in lights and reflective vest. I think it's my next bike purchase: one of those yellow silly vests...…
use your eyes and take the time to ride safe and you will be fine - doing that will significantly improve your odds whatever they are.
There are many times when cycling you should check behind you but it's not always easy - A rear view mirror and some reflectors are a far better risk reduction investment than any helmet ever was for the road cyclist.

AI Global standard AS/NZS2063.One of the requirements of this standard is that the instructions for use must include "No attachments should be made to the helmet except those recommended by the helmet manufacturer".(Ref 1)Another requirement is "The helmet should have no external rigid projections greater than 5mm in height, except for ventilation holes and associated depressions." (Ref 1)There are many products, such as cameras, mirrors and lights, available in Australia for attachment to bicycle helmets. As far as I know none are approved for attachment by any Australian helmet manufacturer. It seems unlikely that they could give such approval as they have a requirement to have “no external rigid projections greater than 5mm in height”.Regarding ventilation “The helmet must incorporate features designed to transfer heat from the head”. (Ref 1)There are covers available for helmets which cover the helmet and all ventilation holes in order to provide protection from the sun.
My question is this. If a helmet owner attaches a camera, mirror or light to their helmet, or covers it for sun protection, does the helmet still comply with AS/NZS2063, or does it no longer comply and is therefore illegal to use on the public road?
The eventual response from DPTI was:
The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) has advised that Part 9(d) of the Standard refers to the requirement that each helmet shall be accompanied by a brochure or label that will include the following: "Noattachments should be made to the helmet except those recommended by the helmet manufacturer."I am advised that this indicates that attaching a non-recommended device to a helmet is contrary to the spirit of the Standard but the helmet itself does not lose its approval. I am further advised that as long as the helmet is suppliedwith a compliant brochure or label it remains legal to wear it with an attachment.In regard to external projections, as you have also noted the Standard states there should be no rigid external projections greater that 5mm in height. DPTI has advised that this requirement relates to the shell or mould of the basichelmet itself and an attachment such as a mirror or light is not considered rigid and does not therefore form part of the basic structure of the helmet.
So the opinion of DPTI is that there is a thing called "the spirit of theStandard". It is Ok to violate this spirit because the helmet was sold andsupplied with a compliant label or brochure.Apparently the label or brochurewill overpower whatever you do to the "spirit of the Standard."This raises a possible defence which could be tested in court.The requirement for "no modifications" is also part of the Instructions to Userrequired by the Standard. "No modifications" must be on a label. "Noun-approved attachments" can be on a label or brochure.If I modify my helmet (a lot) to the point where all I have left is the label,which I attach inside my hat or cap, then could I not argue that, while what Ihave done is "contrary to the spirit of the Standard" my helmet does not loseits approval because it was supplied (when purchased) with a compliant labeland so remains legal to wear?Other state ministers might not respond by inventing the same cop out. I wouldbe interested to hear from others if this "spirit of the Standard" exists inother states. In SA at least, the power of the helmet lies in the compliant label or brochure.…
$20 is a small price for safety.
With the helmet-mount, there is no distraction from the road ahead. Anything approaching from behind, whether a car or another bicycle, looms into your consciousness without you having to choose to look for it.
