The Spirit of Tasmania ferry steams up Sydney Harbour in 2006, carrying passengers, their bicycles, and even some cars, after its overnight voyage from Devonport. (I am the passenger nearest the camera on the top deck.)
Like most good bicycle-carrying modes of public transport, the service has been discontinued. And you didn't even need to put your bike in a box.
