Al. replied to Dabba's discussion Hand held GPS vs smart phone GPS
"I use nothing but my phone for navigation. I use 2 mapping apps on it: Locus map and Memory Map. Locus uses open maps and is generally pretty good. It often has tracks marked on it that are barely visible on the ground. But because they are open…"

Al. replied to DrFine's discussion Minimum Passing Distance - Bike NSW reporting survey
"Generally positive. It's interesting that while some law changes go unnoticed,  this one that allows drivers to legally cross double lines has become quite popular. Still get some "unavoidable" close passes from cars that…"

"Agree. Normally it can be shut down. But it can get so hectic you feel for sure you are going to be tossed off. I had one where I ended up having to go straight in order to stay on and that meant, in that case, the bush as there was a corner in…"

Peter Hoskins replied to Al.'s discussion Death shakes
"Interesting read, key words seem to be - a bit frightening and poo paper. I am yet to experience this shake, but I have had lesser trouble with rough surfaces on a fast decent. Rear  wheel wanted to lift or was it my imagination. We you…"

Eleri replied to Al.'s discussion Death shakes
"I got the death wobbles two days ago descending fast on gravel.  I probably hit a washboard bump at a frequency that set it off.  Heavy on the pedals, light on the bars and knees on the top tube steadied it up - what Noel said.…"

noelbike replied to Al.'s discussion Death shakes
"The really unnerving thing about speed wobbles is that gripping the bars (more) firmly seems to just make it worse. It is counter intuitive. Both knees on the top tube , braking but pushing on the pedals still, as light a bar grip as possible, and a…"

"Had it happen a few times when I tried a shorted stem. Ended up going back to the longer one as the bike was more stable through the corners. Only a centimetre difference on the stem length but made a huge difference in handling."

John Knight replied to Al.'s discussion Death shakes
"29er does it to when it has the big 2" tyres on. Itdoes it in slo-mo, maybe at 25-30kmh with the bars waggling in big wide slow wobbles! As said previously though, I would be seriously freaked out if this ever happened at high speed with hands…"
