"If you get a $600 bike then keep track of how much you save on bus fares (via a spread sheet, or put the money in a jar). You'll find that by the end of the year you would have paid off the bike and can start saving for a new one. Althougt…"

"Modern mountain bikes with suspension are really not much good for commuting or city riding. I have an old rigid-framed MTB from the 1980's which made a great commuting bicycle when i fitted it out with kevlar-belted slick tyres, mudguards,…"

"Anna, the Marrickville Bike Bus goes from Illawarra Road (cnr Horton) through Newtown to the eastern side of the city each day. I'd be happy to divert with you to Haymarket for the first day (or few) of your riding to get you familiar with the…"

"Can you borrow a bike for a while? Once you have been riding, you will have a much better idea what you want. If you want any help with the route and someone to ride with, contact the Bike Bus (does someone have the details handy)"

"While I wouldn't recommend spending a bomb on your first bike, unless you go second hand to get a bike with higher end parts don't skimp out too much. In the end you get what you pay for and this will be reflected in how enjoyable/easy it…"

"Look for a light bike. 700 x 28- 35 tyres I would go a flat bar road bike over a MTB for the road. Like a TREK FX / Specialized Sirrus. Easier to pedal day after day after day...."

"Anna, I am not sure how much cycling you have done but if you are only a novice I would suggest not spending too much money on your bike. $600 will get you a pretty decent bike. I would recommend getting mud guards, decent front and back lights, a…"

"+1 what Naomi said. My only other bit of advice is around tyres. Some commuter hybrids come with rather skinny tyres. Skinny tyres might save a few seconds in the TdF, but they are uncomfortable and prone to flats in the city. I run 36mm slicks on…"

"Yer, thanks. I was aware I hadn't put any budget indication in there. I'm not quite sure of my budget at this stage, as I've yet to look into things very far, but I imagine from $600 upwards will get me a great bike. It'd be…"

"How far is it from Marrickville to Haymarket? It sounds like a pretty flat ride. What is your budget? $600, $1200, $2000 +? There was someone talking about a belt driven bike with hub gears a few days…"

New bike

I would like to get myself a suitable bike for commuting from home in Marrickville to Haymarket daily. I'm about 70kg female. I'd like something comfortable and fast, preferably a bit more on the mountain bike side so I can maybe jump a little gutter. I saw my neighbour's Trek, Bontrager. Is this a good choice? It looks great. Any suggestions appreciated. I've got a good helmet.
