BIKESydney Social Lounge at The Alexandria Hotel

May 25, 2012 from 6:30pm to 8pm
Join us on the last Friday of the month to bang on about bikes over beers and battered barramundi. From 6:30-8:00pm we’ll be catching up after work with drinks and dinner. From 8:00pm people will have 5 mins to pitch an idea to those gathered to either: just tell them about it; get some feedback; or recruit volunteers to a project. BIKESydney will be pitching ideas but the floor will be open to all. Register for your five minutes with the BIKESydney meeters and greeters when you arrive.See More

Advocacy: Sharing knowledge and developing skills

Posted on February 15, 2010 at 9:30am 6 Comments

“We are a political movement. Cyclists are changing American cities. We are sometimes legally and sometimes illegally, pushing people out of their comfort zones into a new place. We are change agents. A big part of political change is taking risks to do things that haven’t been done before and having the courage to do that.” Charles Gandy, Mobility Coordinator, Long Beach

Wrap-up from London

Posted on October 11, 2009 at 8:00am 8 Comments

This is my second post about my research trip to the UK, US and Canada to investigate bicycling advocacy. To all the people who have emailed asking where my blogs are I apologise for my slow dissemination of information. The blog hasn’t been so easy to get to. The combination of cycling around a new city and taking on board so much new information is tiring business (but still hugely fun and rewarding). I’m also never quite sure when is a good… Continue

London: First Impressions

Posted on September 18, 2009 at 6:57am 7 Comments

I arrived in London on Monday on a three week visit to look at how bicycle advocacy is done here. The trip is part of an eleven week journey across the UK, US and Canada funded by a Churchill Fellowship.

Why go to London?

The number of people cycling here has doubled since 2000. Despite the increased numbers of people on bikes, casualties are going down. The road culture is similar to Sydney's - congestion is chronic and sharing a contested space is fraught.

Religous zealots...well sort of.

Last Saturday the BIKESydney crew rocked along to the Paddington Alive Festival on Oxford Street. We were running bike valet parking for the event, handing out cycling related information and we ran a social ride.

The morning started slowly until David realised that people might be avoiding us thinking we might be religious zealots. One big hand-made sign advertising free cycling maps later and the above was the result.
