Up to three just now.

A Felt that I use for riding to the pool. A Principia road bike and now a Baum.
About Me:
Married to Anne, Father of 3 girls.

Professional, working in the city; commuting whenever I can.

Very interested in the cycling movement right now; so many issues intersect in terms of health; environment; social change; policy. Cycling for me has become a metaphor for freedom. I believe that the more people ride bikes, the better society becomes.

I love ideas, books, music and drinking wine with friends.

Check out a somewhat sceptical Geraldine Doouge with this story from the ABC this morning.

Can we have one of these, please?

Would be nice to get this level of support. Can you imagine the RTA/NRMA coming up with something like this?

What a strange start to the cycling year I've had. Literally from the highs at the Audax Alpine Classic in January, to the lows of recuperating (now) from a herniated disc in my back.

That is a story in itself. I usually ride a couple of mornings with the LACC bunches at Homebush but have been forced to look at other options as it's "Show-time" out there.

My back had been a bit "funny" due to a cycling related knock I took a couple of weeks ago. This brought back unpleasant memories of a "bulging" disc I suffered a couple of years ago (recovery from which brought me to cycling in earnest, so every cloud...).

Anyway, my mate and I were doing laps around Haberfield on Tuesday morning. I was thinking as I was riding what a great circuit it would make for a Criterium (as part of a Haberfield festival, perhaps?) when I felt an upleasant "pop" in my lower back. "Damn" I said to myself, "I knew I should have gone for a swim this morning." I eased off and waited for my mate to catch up and told him my back had gone so I would have to head home. We rode from Haberfield to Drummoyne (where I live) no problem. He rode off home and rode up my path, hopped off the bike and WAMMO, worse pain than I ever remember. I was left holding my bike with one hand and unable to move, at all. I couldn't even put the bike down. I found myself repeating a mantra based on a word which rhymes with "puck". Managed to get my bike gear off (now THAT was a challenge; got upstair and into bed next to Anne and told her the welcome news. We both work and have 3 school age kids so when I am out of service, Anne's workload basically doubles.

That was Tuesday. Today is Saturday. I have learned to love Panadene Forte; Volaren and flirted with Valium. Oh, and red wine is still the best muscle relaxant.

I think I'm on the mend but it has taken much longer than I had thought.

In a funny way, between the pain and spasms. I have enjoyed the time; just me and the laptop. Emailing; browsing. Thinking stuff. There is not a lot of time for thinking "stuff" when you're working full time and riding whenever you can.

So what's the plan? Hopefully I'll be better in the next few days. The plan is to get back to the pool as soon as I can and get some strength back into the lower back. I need to revisit the old yoga idea as I clearly have a weakness down there and need to work on the core strength.

I had been planning on doing an Audax 300 ride in April but just can't see that happening. Should be back on my bike by then, but baby steps....

Sorry, Farnsy, when I corrected a couple of errors in my post about the Freo-Bondi record, all the comments disappeared, including yours about the Around Australia record attempt. You might want to repost??
