James Gray replied to Jonathon Troy's discussion converting a 7 speed bike to a 8+ speed
"I would say it also depends on which 7 speed bike you're wanting to convert. If it's a bike shop brand then I'd consider it. If it's something cheaper I wouldn't bother. Plus you are correct about not trying to cold set…"

Tony De Lyall replied to Jonathon Troy's discussion converting a 7 speed bike to a 8+ speed
"I have converted a older 7 speed road bike to 8/9 speed. However this was using rim brakes. Just some considerations. What counts is the hub. You need a hub that will take a 8/9 (or 10 speed) cassette. And then you get a wheel built on that hub or…"

"The width of the frame is different.  7 speed has a narrower frame for the rear wheel than 8 speed.  BTW 8,9,10,11 all have the same frame width "

converting a 7 speed bike to a 8+ speed

I know it can be done - sort of! I am curious about the new 7 speed bikes with disc brakes. I have a suspicion that going from 7 to 8 will be a waste of money. However going from 7 to 10 for example may be a different kettle of fish. I have seen a video on YouTube where 7 speed cyclocross bike was rejigged to a 1 x 10 configuration.. This involved the owner cold setting the rear stays, I gather this will not work with aluminium frames. So my question is could a 8 - 10 speed wheel with a 10…See More

Jonathon Troy replied to Tony De Lyall's discussion NSW to privatise state forests?
"I am wondering about that myself. As I understand it:Fire trails are regarded as public roads hence the NSW Police can dish out fines etc for riding without bells or Styrofoam hats. I would wonder if this will continue to be the case. They are…"

Bill Parker replied to Jonathon Troy's discussion STI shifters for disc brakes or Cantilever Brakes
"No, stock standard STIs, other than newer STIs for hydro brakes I don't believe there are any shimano STIs specific to disc or rim brakes. I have always had bikes with mixed road / mountain components, always long cage RD and big cassettes so…"

My Gong Ride Tour

Posted on November 15, 2014 at 6:26pm 4 Comments

Well as you may remember I planned to do a tour to get to Gong Ride. I made a booking for Youth Hostel at Central and got the leave approved but got caught up in work and the date almost crept up on me. On Thursday morning I got my Cell S2200 road bike ready. It has a Topeak rack and a Topeak MTX bag with compartments that unzip into panniers. I also have a bag that straps onto the top tube and…

The road back - 6 weeks off the bike is bad for you

Posted on September 27, 2014 at 10:11pm 1 Comment

Well I have been back on the bike for a fortnight. On Tuesday week I rode to work for the first time since the accident. It was good to be out there even though I was a bit saddle sore and I was back in time for things to get a bit Alfred Hitchcock as regards the magpies. As things progressed the commute got better and I was able to get to and from work and too and from TAFE without any serious problems.

I also undertook one of my milestone rides. I said I would do the Goulburn Cycle…

The road back - second stage

Posted on September 13, 2014 at 6:44pm 0 Comments

I have begun the second stage of the road back. I decided to take myself shopping the other day and decided to check out the pricing on helmets. Given the last one prevented the prang from being worse than it was, I decided to get one from the LBS rather than go online. I got the feeling that the online price war has had it's effect on the local bike shops given one only stocked RJays and the others likewise had limited stock. Eventually I found a Scott MTB helmet on special which fitted…

On the road back!

Posted on August 26, 2014 at 8:52pm 0 Comments

Anyone who read this will know I had a prang not so long ago and copped at least 4 broken ribs and wrote off a helmet. Well I have gone back to work - they were snowed under while I was away. I am getting back into the swing of things and hopefully will get on top of things by the end of the week.

I was told I would have at least 6…

A long way for a pie?

Posted on October 8, 2013 at 11:12pm 3 Comments

Well I rode 150 Km yesterday and ticked off one of the rides I have wanted to do since I arrived here in Canberra. I have been planning to ride to a number of the towns around the ACT. I have rode to Goulburn 4 times and Bungendore once. I had planned to visit Yass earlier in the year when my wife was in Sydney for her high school reunion but wound up having to cancel that when the reunion was cancelled. For the past week she has been in Brisbane visiting a cousin who is suffering cancer and…

Hi Jonathon, sorry I should have done this sooner. I have been extremely busy with family matters lately. I will contact Kevin Young (CEO of Cycling NSW) about Amy's Ride in Sydney and get back to you when I hear what he has to say.

And dealing with anything that requires balls for that matter. They are a complete waste of space, IMHO.
