Thanks Kathy and a Good Morning to all the members of the Sydney Cyclist community!
I am really looking forward to reading more and contributing to the discussions. There seems to be so many fantastically qualified people already on this site - if only the bureaucrats would listen to their research and experience instead of blindly toeing the line of helmet manufacturers and car lobby groups!
Safe cycling isn't about a fraudulent bit of plastic on your head - it is all about being aware of yourself, the conditions, other road users and having respect for whatever is around you!
Cheers Kathy - there's nothing in the way of organisation yet. Those of us who would focus on that are spread pretty thin across different areas of cycle advocacy - and sadly there are many leading cycle advocates - even utility riders who don't get how important this issue is. So a lot of the lobbying is still within the community. The first TV media on the issue turned up the other day though.
Probably one reason there's less focus on the issue is that prosecutions are - relativelty to austrialia - rare, and fines less. Though there was the scary incident of the officer who rammed a cycle rider to 'save' him from riding without a helmet. Yes really.
I really hope we do see some serious focus on this- but right now we her ein auckland are scrambling to make the most of a new local government receptive to boosting cycling, even if it doesn't have the first clue what utility cycling really is. So that's kind of a good thing.
Thanks Kathy. I'm so glad you had a very good day after having travelled so far and the nasty experiences with the law. I have a feeling Sue Abbott is the charismatic advocate this cause has been waiting for.
This helmet debacle is funny coming from Holland. I have a lot more patience for it now. I suppose we just have a lot of educating to do. It is counter-intuitive and not always easy convincing people that mandatory helmet laws are actually making jumping on a bike more dangerous.
Hi there Kathy - i'd love to work on changing mandatory helmet laws. It'd sure beat arguing with cops. The law in NSW started in 1992. I've written to the Minister recently to ask what prompted this change in 1992. There's some good info on Sydney Cyclist and I'm still learning. Keep in contact.
