Touring Tasmania

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 3:30pm 10 Comments

I recently returned from a touring trip in Tasmania. The plan was for three of us to start out from Hobart and work our way up the east coat, across to Launceston and then back to Hobart by the central tablelands. We would mostly be camping and had allowed about two  and a half weeks for the journey, averaging 50 km per day. Used Lonely Planet's 'Cycling in Australia' as a guide.

Epping Rd cycleway, home to Lane Cove's laziest car parkers

Posted on June 1, 2008 at 7:11pm 38 Comments

The Epping Rd cycleway between Centennial Av and Orion Rd has only been open for a few weeks. The cyleway is painted bright green to denote its purpose, and more signage will follow. Despite this some residents of Epping Rd are treating it as a new parking area. This makes it difficult and dangerous for cyclists to squeze throught in the gap between the cars and the concrete strip next to the bus lane. It is even worsre if cyclists travelling in… Continue

Kim,
Thanks for your considered comments on our recent blogpost. Indeed we think those lomandras placed next to the path are intended to keep people clear of the path.

But what do you reckon is the reason for the ones planted across the path up to the base of the pole? It just don't add up!

Happy riding, and keep your eyes peeled on the "cycleways" for parked cars, garbage bins, dogs, errant peds, poles, plants, glass, badly dropped kerbs, missing slabs, confused taxis... oh, and the odd cyclist!

Herron is a serial offender in the North Shore Times but I enjoy firing back at him. It certainly does give cyclists a higher profile and it looks good when we outnumber him many times to one by weight of letters!

Kim, you'll be able to tell if the road is open as you pass the top entrance to the Park (General San Martin Dr). There were signs just beyond the intersection and before the toll gate there when Tony and I rode past today. Otherwise, if there is anyone in the toll booth down at the West Head Rd entrance, they will be able to say if the road is open.

BTW, is your profile pic taken at West Head?

Re: Jamie Dudderidge

Hi KimR. Sorry I came late to your discussion about this low-life Dudderidge. I would have liked to have put my bit in. I know a bit about him as friends of mine lived in the same apartment building. In his private life he was as big a scumbag as in his 'professional' life. He and his partner at the time terrorised two young families living in the building, one with two kids under four, the other with a toddler and a mother 7 months pregnant. In the end the Owners Corporation issued his partner (as he wasn't on the lease and showed up months later) with 9 by-law violations--there are only 15 in total, so you can imagine what sort of people they were/are! Funny thing there was she ended up being conned just like others and in the process caused her to have to leave the apartment. Police were called as the guy scratched the glass door of one apartment while people were inside and damage was done to cars parked onsite. Our friends looked into getting an AVO but they were told they would need tangible proof of his behaviour (right at the end that came when he interrupted an onsite Owners meeting and he displayed his stupidity and aggression to all there). He was scum and we knew even as he was opening his shop in Cremorne he was a con man. Did you know he had left the country as his previous company had gone bust too--his partner, before things soured, told our friends he had had to leave the country as he had gone bankrupt--'another vicim of the GFC'--but that he was an 'entrepreneur' and soon they would be buying a big house in Mosman (Oh, and she was one of his friend's wife, btw--pity those who trust him!--and he had abandoned his wife and 3 kids in London to be with her--colourful you have to admit at least!)  Presumably bankruptcy was why he needed the business partner. Yes, it is him in the Mosman and Manly Daily, the latter is just with a beard and less hair. We know the local bike shop owners in Manly and they knew he wasn't going to even get through the summer. We also know MANY people in Manly who know many people and we made sure everyone we knew knew what we knew. He was a fat, lazy little tosser who had no moral compass. I'd guess he had you work Saturdays, or maybe a few consecutive days that would allow him to have a long weekend to go to a bike expo? I'd guess he never had any intention of paying you. When we saw his ad on Sydney Cyclist and Gumtree we knew he had hardly sold a bike and had no cash. Sorry to hear you got caught up with him (think about his poor business partner who must have funded this venture!). But good on you for following through. Without records of these people there is no hope of pinning anything to them. Our friends regret not taking out the AVO even more now.
