"Agree - put the gears back on. A singlespeed, presumably running a fairly tall gear, means that you have to use a lot of hand strength on the bars to get enough leverage when taking off, or going uphill. Singlespeed may make sense in Manhattan or…"

"I sometimes get pain in my right hand - and it's usually because my brake pads need cleaning / replacing. When they are in a state, I have to squeeze the brakes harder to stop, which can make my hands ache."

I've got a pain in my left hand that's slowly gotten worse over the 6 months since I sold my geared commuter and got a single speed. The pain is mostly in the pinkie, and a bit in the ring finger. Have been living and cycling in Sydney for 2 years now. Only just graduated from a cheap commuter bike to one that I enjoy being on, so am spending a lot more time on the bike. Best feeling in the world!
