Lookin make 3 different styles of gel saddles that are suitable for different riding angles. I use the 30-60 deg for both my tourer and my roadie, but I use a women's saddle on my tourer because it spreads the load even further, so even at the end o…

Will have to look that up Bob! Also - it is different for different types of bikes and riding styles/positions too, so a perfect saddle for your road bike probably won't be the right one for a hybrid etc.

I'll just put in my plug for egg beaters as well. I just have the standard egg beaters, which I have used for both mountain biking and commuting for several years now with absolute minimal maintenance required. I doubt if they can be beaten as far a…

I like mine - and I can wear my Shimano MTB shoes or my road bike shoes with these too.

Roadbikerider.com had an e-book called the Perfect Bicycle Seat by Joshua Cohen. Chapter 2 has a comprehensive discussion of anatomy and saddles for women- pros and cons of cut outs and wider or flatter profiles. Cut outs can increase pressure local…

Agree Reliability is EVERYTHING - my life is "on the road" here. I always buy the best tyres for my car - as their contact with the road, is what will ultimately get me out of a tricky situation. Also on reliability , an enduring childhood memory i…

Northbound (and southbound), another option is to use the generally lightly-trafficked, scenic route west of the Pacific Highway ...... see http://www.northsydney.nsw.gov.au/resources/documents/bikemap_2.pdf .... uses Edward St, lane immediately w…

I've got a set of Shimano MTB pedals that I bought about 18 years ago and done probably around 80,000ks. I've not needed to pull them to pieces for any maintenance, I just hit the spring with a bit of grease every now and then. You get what you pay…

What hasn't been canvassed is your route home. The hills and traffic make it tricky. There is a shared path on the eastern side of Pacific Hwy between Berry and West Sts (I think it goes that far -- if only to McLaren, you can use the narrow lane…

I'll give another vote to the Shimmano mt-324's. When approaching intersections, riding in heavy traffic where I may need to stop suddenly, or on rough/sandy unsealed roads, I often ride with one foot unclipped. It's a quick action to flip the pedal…

THANKS! From memory - the route sounds ideal for the morning when I expect to go quite early - its straightforward, and mostly downhill. However in the afternoon, when I am probably going to be tired, still building fitness, coping with the uphill (…

Hi Melody, I tried all of the above (I ride from lane cove to city) and my preferred is brook st. west st and then left at ridge, right on to miller and then straight down miller. I like this one cause of a good traffic light run and light traffic…

Glebe Cycles made me this amazing custom built "Montague" Mountain Bike back around mid 1980s - NO suspension - painted Fluoro pink - never been repainted - still as bright as the day I bought it.

My rationale is to be as bright and as conspicuous on the road as I can!

I bought it to replace an ancient ladies Oxford - which was damn heavy. Although with this bike I never did learn to jump a gutter - in anticipation of avoiding a vehicle if I had to. Must admit I am eyeing off my son's bike which has suspension!
About Me:
Spend way too much time in front of a computer (I am a Technical Writer) and my muscles are atrophied. Riding a bike has always been a fun gentle exercise, although these days its usually confined to the Spring Cycle because its safer. I did do the Sydney to Gong ride years ago, and I would love to work my way up to a bigger ride.

Since the Lane Cove Cycleway opened - as I drive on my way to Pymble I have seen more and more cyclists, and now that my work is moving to North Sydney its time to consider really stepping up and becoming a serious rider. WATCH OUT FOR THE FLUORO PINK LADY CYCLIST!

Bike Pedals - Time for a Change - Reasonably Priced Recommendations?

My bike pedals are ANCIENT - with aluminium frame and straps for the toe holds - positively dangerous when you want to take off fast.

Time for a change. I am overwhelmed by the variety of pedals, but have read cycling shoes are more efficient.

Can I have some suggestions for reasonable cost (Avg $150), brand and suppliers.

A Delicate Question for the Girls - How do you choose the right seat for you???

Encouraged by the great enthusiasm, sincerity and generosity nature of the Sydney Cyclist community - the quality of your feedback is truly wonderful - I would like to pose this burning question.

My bike is 25 years old - no suspension. When I bought the last seat, the bike shop assistant showed me his girl seat range, handed me one and told me to "put it up there". I don't know who was more embarrassed him or me. I grabbed it, paid for it and scurried away.

In last year's 2008 Sydney Spring C… Continue

Office Cycle Girl - what can I put in a backpack to wear at the office?

In a month's time I want to be cycling to my new office at North Sydney.

I doubt if this company's new offices will have lockers or closet hanging space, so everything has to be either kept in my desk drawers or brought with me.

The first drive in trip I can dump cosmetics, jewellery, shoes, towels etc, but the rest I will have to scrunch in a back pack.

How do you office girls cope with having reasonable looking clothing for the office that you have to bike in with you?

I was thinking along… Continue

Hi Darrell - My husband owned a Nimbus 52 (VH GOF) - he was able recite CHAOTIC but didn't recognise the AB - what does that mean? I was learning handgliding in the 1980s - so it predates even your time and procedural reform.
I learnt in the Kurnell sandhills and watched the sand disappear in trucks. Had everything ready to buy my own kite - little Honda Accord Hatchback had towbars front and back, still have the mount frames, even designed my own wings (Fluoro Pink & black), but then if I remember, life got serious, had to work, had kids, mortgage - ya de dah. Promised hubby wouldn't start to fly again until youngest was at least 16 - already had one death in family in an ultralight. The pre-flight I learnt was basic with no acronymn to guide us - although it did follow a set routine. Son turns 16 in 18 months........... I did a lot of Scuba diving in 80s and 90s - and so got used to a set pre-dive procedure - I love life too much, and being abled body to not be diligent about taking care of my own safety.

G'day Melody. When I was gliding the pre-flight check anagram was AB CHAOTIC. Is/was it the same in hang gliding too? I know that GFA and the hang gliding association has come closer together since I sold my glider in 1994, so I thought that there may have been an increased commonality in procedures.
