Bradley Wiggins: Paris-Roubaix was one of my childhood dream races

In an exclusive interview, the winner of the 2012 Tour de France tells all about his exhaustive preparations for the cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix, as he watches all his old videos of the event to give him the edge
• Froome on the long, hellish and cobbled road from Paris to Roubaix
• Wiggins to ride in Belgian sprint classic

Over the winter Sir Bradley Wiggins has gone back in time, making a return to his teenage years as a scrawny, cycling-mad youth. The 2012 Tour de France winner gathered up the VHS videos he had recorded in the mid-1990s from his childhood home in Kilburn, north London, and began watching editions of the Paris-Roubaix – “the Hell of the North” – Classic from 20 years ago. He went through his copies of the magazine Cycling Weekly from the time, all the better to learn about the unique qualities of the final target of his road racing career.

The first Paris-Roubaix Wiggins recalls was a 1993 victory for Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle of France, who finished a fraction of a tyre’s width ahead of Franco Ballerini of Italy on the Roubaix velodrome.

Team Sky’s Richie Porte holds off Alejandro Valverde to win Volta a Catalunya

Tinkoff-Saxo terminate contract of manager Bjarne Riis

Team Sky’s Richie Porte won the Volta a Catalunya on Sunday to add to his success at Paris-Nice this year.

The Australian entered the final day with a five-second lead and despite seeing the former champion Alejandro Valverde claim the seventh stage in Barcelona, he had enough of a buffer to hold on to top spot in the overall classification. Valverde crossed the line first following a bunch sprint to earn his third stage victory of the week and move up to second in the overall standings, but Porte came home safely in the peloton to claim the title.

Cross City Tunnel

As I was *ahem* driving to the Central Coast early this morning, I passed through the Cross City Tunnel and saw a young woman on a bike pedalling furiously through the tunnel and then taking the harbour bridge exit. Fortunately the drivers in front of me slowed down to accomodate her, but I was thinking that the CCT owners probably don't encourage this. Is it allowed? Would you get in trouble for doing it?I would never be game to try it myself ... although the thought of a shortcut like that is…See More

No worries. Hope it works out well for you. Say hi to Peter Fleming from Neil and ask him if he remembers the big green tandem (about 20 years ago!).
