Commuting from Dural to North Sydney – Am I insane?

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 9:36am 33 Comments

I have been commuting to work almost exclusively by bicycle now for almost 3 years, Rain or Shine (but not Dust Storms!). One Travel 10 Bus Ticket would last me 8 or 9 months!

I have lived in Marsfield for 11 years, commuting to the city on the bus. A slow and painful journey along a choked Epping Rd. This was made even worse when construction on the Lane Cove Tunnel began, and Epping Rd was thrown into total chaos. It was during this construction that I saw a Cycleway start to…

Finally moved to Nth Sydney....

Posted on June 18, 2010 at 12:00am 10 Comments

Well, after 2 and a bit years of construction and fit out, we finally made the move from the CBD over to Nth Sydney.

I rode my bike into the new office for the first time today. Here are a couple of pictures of the Bike Parking:

This is the main cage, which holds about 150 Bikes. As you can see, it is being well used :-) The building is currently less than half occupied. The rest of our company moves in 2 weeks time, so that… Continue

Back on the bike after 2 weeks due to a broken frame...what could possibly go wrong? As it turns out, a lot!

All I can say is f@$k me! What the hell is the Universe trying to do to me?

Was riding into work this morning, enjoying the clear skies and the feeling of being back on the bike after two weeks of suffering public transport. As I was cycling up to Lane Cove on the Cycle Path, I got T-Boned by a car! The driver came out of their driveway, attention focussed not on what is right in front of them, but rather on the traffic coming from the right. As a result, I had no chance. Thankfully… Continue

Thanks for sharing that Paul. I suspect the second time your brain might have still been rolling around. The thought of making a plane roll in the air on purpose horrifies me. As Monsieur Bike has a pilot's licence too (and, in fact is taking his aero engineering students flying at Bankstown tomorrow as part of a course they are doing), I have had a bit of exposure to light aircraft. One of his colleagues owns his own Pitt Special , but then that guy doesn't have a wife or kids. I read a book, too, written by one of Charlie Henderson's daughters. I think she was an alcoholic (not her confession, my judgemental conclusion) but she was also an aerobatic pilot. I wonder how many errors she made...?

Yes, the same applies to my husband - family and lack of money stopped him flying for a few years until Sydney Uni paid for his hours to bring him back to currency so that he can run this course. I am not sure what it is, but he teaches Flight Dynamics so somehow that involves going to Bankstown and flying to a limited extent only.

This is him: http://www.aeromech.usyd.edu.au/staff/pwg.html

I remember that guy being killed in the Pitts. It seems it can happen to the best, which is scary. When we have small children, we need to move our priorites. Stay safe and enjoy parenthood. :-)

Hey Paul, glad to hear you're back on wheels. A friend showed me a better way to get onto Miller St the other day, thought of you after our discussion about the Pacific Hwy. When you come off the bridge, instead of going up Middlemiss, go left at the roundabout and head up Lavender until you reach Blues Pt Rd (which is Miller). Saves getting on the hwy and also saves having to cut across it for a right turn into Miller.

Hope you're well...not hurting too much after bad sleep and big rides :o)

Ah yeah it wasn't too bad, you can get a pretty good run up from the downhill section. I had the advantage of being with someone else which always means you go a bit harder without realising how much it's wearing you out!
I should head out to Olympic Park and give the tracks a go, trouble is when you come from Cremorne you're pretty well spent by the time you get there (or I am anyway!). I work in Wooloomooloo and for a few extra km's I tried riding out along the Epping Rd path instead of straight home, a couple of days this week. You northerners have a nice path but your hills are even worse than mine! Made it as far as Delhi Rd before turning back, good fun :o)

Alexander's mother and I checked out the detour of Brown's Waterhole today on a bit of a "training" ride through from LCNP. It's a rough downhill track to the bridge from the Macq Uni side but not hard to walk with the bike. The bridge does have a railing on the outside but not on the pipe side so it would be possible to fall under the pipe and into the river by mis-stepping on that side -- if one were clumsy! Otherwise it's a perfectly easy crossing.

On the Turramurra side there is a choice of tracks; 90 degrees left takes you on the flat to the cycle path near the Waterhole. Straight ahead from the bridge requires some carrying of the bike but brings you up to the path closer to Kissing Point Rd -- didn't go up that part because it was way too steep! -- Neil

Hi Paul, Yes that's the same Colin Lott. He is not specifically from Ku-ring-gai Police. He is the Inspector of the Hills Area Command which covers most of the northern area of Sydney. I thought he would be a good one to talk to about Josh's incident (and the guy's repsonse) because the incident occured in Pennant Hills which is within Colin's jursdiction and the driver lives on the Central Coast and so does Colin. Also, I know he is sympathetic to cyclists and he is just an all-round conscientious nice guy. He is also quite high up in the St John Ambulance - as a volunteer. He's a smart dude too.
