What sort of riding do you do ?
Recreational, Touring
Where in Sydney do you live ?
Rooty Hill
Tell us about your bikes
Orbea Artea 'Travel Light' - The main bike
Malvern Star Commuter Hybrid - My old bike, which gets lent out to others.
Bob the trailer - Which doesn't fit on the Orbea.
About Me:
CAMWEST treasurer,
CAMWEST rep with Blacktown Council bicycle Steering committee
Recreational riding, mainly on weekends
Touring - Enjoy unsupported touring (and have a reputation for carrying a lot...I even take the kitchen sink sometimes). Have done the last 5 NSW Big Rides and a few other supported rides as well.
Would like to ride to work more often, but I find the 3 hour ride each way (using back streets and bike paths) is not conducive to a productive working day.

Can a bike be a 'my place' like a car can?

Posted on January 22, 2011 at 7:07pm 16 Comments

I've just finished reading Hugh Mackay's latest offering, 'What makes us tick'.  There was lots of great stuff in there; plenty of fodder for interesting discussions with people on a variety of topics.

One section which really struck me was when he was describing the role of the car in the chapter "The desire for 'My place'"

‘I've lost count of the number of times I've heard people…

Gates, Corrugations and a great ride

Posted on May 31, 2009 at 10:02pm 8 Comments

Yesterday (Sat May 30th '09) four of us rode from Goulburn to Exeter via Canyonleigh (see bikely route).

It was a great day's riding - The company, the weather (We only really started copping showers in the last 10 km or so), the warm Canyonleigh General Store/Coffee shop, and most of the route was on fairly quiet rural roads. The fact that around 30 of the 70 km was along unsealed roads may have been a… Continue

2 day Rooty Hill to Moss Vale Tour Ride Report

Posted on January 27, 2009 at 9:18pm 3 Comments

For quite some time I'd been wanting to find a safe and enjoyable way of cycling out of Sydney to the south. A few years back a group of us started a tour at Moss Vale (See Moss Vale to Nowra via Numerella Tour). I've done some other riding around the Southern Highlands and beyond, but never felt comfortable about cycling there from Sydney. I'd taken part in the 2003 Big Ride, which… Continue

Great ride at Christmas

Posted on January 20, 2009 at 8:09pm 5 Comments

Although not around Sydney, I did a fantastic 30+ km ride while visiting my parents in Bairnsdale over Christmas. I'd been thinking of doing this ride for a couple of years, and finally did it. I wish I could do it more often....See Route Description and a few photos.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the offer. At this stage I will stay separate from CAMWest. CAMWest obviously has a strong focus outside the Hills. I suspect a group based within the district may more easily attract others concerned about cycling in the Hills.

However I am pretty much a novice at this and would love your advice. I'll contact John and have a chat with him.

Hi Rob, Thank you once again for the fantastic ride last night. We all had great fun. The only bad part was not being able to thank you and say Happy New Year in person. It became a bit hectic just before midnight, with Sarah and Peter H overshooting the exit and the rest of us needing to get back to Rooty Hill soon. We zoomed back safely, I might add. So sorry about that and thank you once again. Hope you caught Sarah and Peter H in the end. Happy 2009!

Rob, That is terrible news. I hope Peter and the other lady do get their bikes back. I will send him a message. Every ride seems to be a learning experience for everyone in one way or another. I wouldn't have expected that to happen as everyone we met on NYE was very friendly (except obviously those louts).

Let's hope the rest of 2009 is a good year! All the best, Leigh
