Hi Aaron, I rode up to Winmalee yesterday and avoided the highway all the way from Penrith to the Winmalee turn off at Springwood. If you're interested in seeing that route have a look at this map I just created on bikely. The tricky bits are the narrow path beside the highway going up the hill to Lapstone and then three short but quite steep sections through Lapstone and up the Glenbrook.

Mitchell's Pass should be good if it's still closed to traffic. That'll bring you out at Blaxland bypassing Lapstone and Glenbrook. I should have tried that on Saturday.
