From the SMH Today: Cyclists up against shock-jock ravings

Why isn't Alan Jones being held accountable for the damage he is causing? After all, he benefits from it. The hatred of bigots against cyclists he is fueling can only cause more accidents and more i…

The system is doomed unless someone competent takes over and quickly. Absolutely, Bicycle Victoria is part of the problem, it can't be part of the solution. They support the helmet ideology. Not su…

I wish I could remember all this when I'm faced with bike riders and non-bike riders giving me grief for not wearing a helmet. Luckily, that doesn't happen to me much at all these days. All I get is people looking down at me or rolling their eyes.…

I'm a member and I'd encourage others to join. You are right. They have been very patient with the Government ignoring them at every step. Perhaps a few more voices would help?

I absolutely agree that this law is counterproductive. I work as a ranger and my sites get thousands of people through it every day. 95% of the first aid I do is for people that trick over whilst walking, fall over whilst standing up or falling down…

Well said Colin, I agree. I use my bell sparingly, only when I really need to. Most of the time, I gently & very slowly go around pedestrians without using a bell. It doesn't seem right to me to use a bell all the time. It's a bit like the car dr…

Yep, the rain does put me off, especially as I am not fit enough to ride every day of the week yet.

sydneyCommuter added a discussion to the group Helmetless riders
One group called the Cyclists Rights Action Group (CRAG) has been fighting the helmet law since the early 1990's. For many years, they have patiently shown the govt that the helmet law has been counterproductive.  The government response so far has…

The helmet law is imposed on the belief that it improves safety. Has it improved safety? It doesn't look like it. The 'safety in numbers' and 'risk compensation' factors seem to overcome the minor safety benefits, resulting in net safety loss. Mor…

Do you think that oz's CTP insurance that cover these sort of things anyway puts a bit of an impediment in this sort of argument, Good point. However, we are too focused on the implementation details rather than the fundamental objective. What I m…

Great observations Andrew! That's exactly the type of real-world evidence that will be helpful in this inquiry.

that minimises the risk of society forking out considerable expense to look after you should you suffer a head injury as a result. Whether this is justified on the available evidence or not can be debated Thanks for exposing the rubbish ideology th…

It was very patronising to be told that the government cares more about our health than we do as individuals Patronising is a mild way to describe the attitude. Some of these people actually believe that we are idiots who wouldn’t be able to survi…

I was at the presentation organised by BikeSydney about vulnerable road users, which was excellent by the way. Kudos to BikeSydney for organising it. I talked with a member from the Staysafe committee. One interesting thing he said is that one way…

About Me:
Grew up in Europe, in a world where cycling was normal and safe.

I use cycling mainly as a mode of transport, using a sturdy bike.

Since arriving in Sydney, I have mostly cycled on week-ends on cycle paths.

In early 2008, I started commuting to work by bicycle. This has made me much healthier. I really enjoy my cycling commute. I'm turning into a bit of a cyclist enthusiast from this experience.
