Taping my handlebars...

Yesterday evening, I acquired a new skill. Or rather, I did something for the first time, which means next time I do it I'll know how to do it better. But probably still not skilfully.

Anyway, the story started when I decided to replace the bars on my Peugeot; the ones that were on there were rather narrow and not comfortable. The bike, being old, has a quill-style stem which requires the bars to be threaded through (as opposed to the more common 'pop top' on modern stems), so I also… Continue

My Audax Alpine Classic

So I went back down to Bright, Vic for the Australia Day long weekend for the 4th time for the Audax Alpine Classic. This year was my second year of entering the event after getting a road bike last year and deciding that instead of hanging around waiting… Continue

Taking the wife to Watson's Bay...

A friend of mine has just come back from Adelaide, where he spent the summer break with his family. He came back just a bit too early to see any of the tour, but his brother-in-law rode the open ride stage, and had a lot of fun (notwithstanding the stinking hot weather and the headwind!). Anyway, he's fired up to do the same thing next year, and bombarded me with a bunch of texts about 'training'.

So, this morning,… Continue

Big Ride Revival?

I was just trying to gauge the level of interest out there to revive the Big Ride, perhaps by someone other than BNSW. When would you see the best time of year being and what rides would be of interest?

Canberra Break

I went for a few days to Canberra to visit some friends so I took advantage of some of the nice bicycle infrastructure to get around. The thing that really stands out about Canberra infrastructure is that everything is so spaced out. Suburbs are separated by huge easements that contain parks, freeways, canals, bike paths etc. There are lots of people riding bikes, many in normal clothes (even with the temp about 30deg) and quite a few without helmets.

The majority of Canberra is… Continue

How do you get people driving vehicles to pass people on bicycles safely?

BUS 370, 0952HRS, north-east end of Lenthall street, Kensington, Sydney.

11/01/2010, 0952HRS, BUS 370, north-east end of Lenthall street, Kensington, Sydney.

Almost crushed me whilst commuting. I swerved and braked to avoid the incoming rear as it overtook. It immediately stopped because of the… Continue

Perplexing Policemen

I was in the city for the opening night of the Sydney Festival with my trusty steed. Many streets were blocked off so that stages could be set up and people could roam the streets.

Like a good, law-abiding cyclist (aren't we all) I was walking my bike through the crowd. Thankfully I spotted a street that was not blocked off for the festival and decided to exit the crowd and take advantage of the empty streets to make it to my next destination.

As I approached the barrier I… Continue

Beauty & The Bike - Why Teenage Girls Don't Cycle

I came across this video on the ever awesome London Cycle Chic blog. It raises some good points. I love seeing high school age kids on bikes though sadly it's a rare sight in Sydney.

I particularly loved the part where one of the participants described her experience as 'liberating' and how good it made her feel. For me this is the power of cycling - I am far… Continue

My New Years Tour

I have finaly crossed one of my big cyclng goals off my list of to do items.

30th December 2009 Stage 1 Lithgow to Katoomba

On Wednesday, I rolled out of bed with a determination to test the route for a ride from my parents place to Sydney. I decided to make it a minimalist tour, so I was going to carry very little. I also have wanted to do this ride as a means of showing that tours can be done on an average or even a below average bike. I chose to do this tour on the Holstar… Continue

Getting older

With Neil's admonition ringing in my head, this morning I made it out for a ride. Because I didn't get into gear early enough, I ended up leaving after it had gone 9am. I guess it's for this reason I didn't see many other cyclists, as you are all dedicated enough to be up and out and have returned by then...

So I meandered around for a while rather aimlessly; after various excursions by the… Continue
