Cycling in Sydney Australia
Yesterday I did a bicycle maintenance course with Bike Wise (http://www.bikewise.com.au/). It's supported by Sydney City Council and is free.Continue
This comes to you about a 8 weeks later than I anticipated thanks to a dooring in mid-November that left with me with a broken 5th metacarpal in my left hand and sore arm. So it took a couple of months longer to reach the 20,000 milestone. I also had a broken wrist earlier in the year which put a dent in reaching the milestone sooner or making it closer to 24,000.
So its been over 3 years since I took delivery of my Kona DrFine with 8 speed Alfine rear hub and started commuting from…Continue

He's an architect, but not the architect.
Climate change is yesterday's news, yesterday's easily escapable truth, yesterday's easily escapable future but now sadly, today's inescapable reality.
Today being Sydney's hottest day. Ever.

As often happens in the lazy hours over Christmas and New Year when you spend time with family, there's ample opportunity for reminiscence and discussion of family history. On my mother's side, we know a great deal of this going back many generations; my uncle is retired and an amateur history buff. On my late father's side, we know very little at all, even only a generation or two back.
My mother casually mentioned this latter fact to my uncle during the break and he chose to…Continue

Just thought I would share this pic I snapped yesterday after a bit of bike shopping with my ex:
From left to right: Byron Cheater (Piece of crap), Esperia Partner (new), Avanti Sprint (my old bike - might rebuild or retire), Potenza Forza (my new bike), BSO (my slow utility bike).
The Esperia Partner and Potenza Forza are the new…Continue
So I put Strava on my phone. Strava, in case you are not acquainted with it, is an app which tracks your route, how fast you go, how long you take and so on. And then the really evil bit – it compares how fast you ride each ‘segment’ with other riders who have followed the same route (or bits of the route). If you are fast enough, you get an award, a place on the leader-board and a ‘King of the Mountain’ (KoM) badge. This has also sparked some controversy, as it may encourage people to ride…Continue
Christmas was a very exciting time in our household. A new bike was waiting underneath the Christmas tree! Unfortunately, it was not for me – but for my daughter, who has now reached an age where her full indoctrination can begin. Actually, in many ways I was more excited than if it had been for me.
She was very excited by her new balance bike, and had several goes –…Continue
I had a whole day to kill yesterday. The solution was, of course, a bike ride.
It didn't matter where, but it was going to be long. In the end, I made it up as I went along, setting off on a loop from the lovely, leafy North Shore out to Parramatta, then Liverpool, Campbelltown and into the southern highlands via the freeway and, after Picton, the old Hume Hwy. Where then would depend on how I felt.
Not everything went as well as it might. For which I blame the government. Not…Continue
