Cycling in Sydney Australia
Bored at work I did some calculations today and established that I passed the 10,000 km mark in the new year.
Yay for me.
Most of those kms have been on my trusty Kona Dr Fine. Prior to that I did a short commute to the Manly wharf on a single speed with the occasional ride to the city before getting the Dr.
Some thoughts ….
I saw this little gem on their website and thought it should be broadcast far and wide !
It may encourage more participants and hopefully will set a precedent for all rides going forward !
I like to think I am on the cutting edge of bike fashion, but there seems to be new craze out there which I have not yet adopted. It is the 'bum hanging out of your shorts' look. Almost every ride over the last few days has involved riding behind someone who has adopted this style.
Not that I mind; I'm all for feeling free and letting it all hang out. Although the…Continue
It’s been a while since I joined this site, got a modern day road bike ( STI levers! wow! , SPD clipless system Wow ! A bike supposedly lighter than 9kgs ! Wow ! ) and after a few rides and familiarising myself with the clipless, and probably infected by various posts on SydneyCyclist, I entertained the idea of commuting to work.
Previously, the very most I’ve done commuting wise was from Sydney Park, along Mitchell Road to Redfern station just so that I don’t have to change… Continue
So glad I've 'reunited' with this great networking site! Just as good as FB, only better because its all 'in the (bicycling) family.' Thus, if FB is a continent, then this site is an exotic little island!?
I'm really at peace now, with some great creative ideas flowing. Riding has taken a bit of a nosedive, since I was ill last year and didn't know it, but I'm feeling much better since my operation. Needless to say, everyone I used to ride with is heaps fitter and lighter than me so…Continue
This week I braved the big bad world, roads and drivers – without my riding instructor, escort and all round nice-guy.
Without anyone to monitor traffic conditions for us, Julliet and I rode slow and steadily - using park paths, back streets and shared paths. We resorted to a bell chime only once, to warn a couple who were preoccupied in a canoodle on the path. Julliet disarmed them with her sheer beauty and sparkle.…Continue
Rode past a cyclist this morning who was riding on the footpath.
On his bike he had a sticker.
One less car.
There are a few problems on the Westlink M7 cycleway right now.
Maybe everybody else knew about this, except for me and my friend Steven the poet...

For a few years the M4 path has been growing in length and now covers a respectable distance from Olympic Park to Mays Hill. Construction is about to start on more to link in with an existing route creating shared path up to the Sth Wentworthville shops. This will provide a much needed rest point with a KFC offering food, water and toilets. My question is: where to next?
The easements either side of the M4 run all the way to Penrith, but west of Greystanes the motorway sort…Continue
This is from the Rockdale Council News:
If you've noticed more cyclists on our roads in recent years, your eyes are not playing tricks on you. This fantastic form of transport and fitness is growing in popularity each year and Council is making inroads to ensure the cycling network, linking the City of Rockdale to other ares of Sydney meets the demands of modern-day bicycle commuters.
Kogarah City and Rockdale City Councils have completed a feasibility study of the two…Continue
I was riding along rocky point road this morning after 11am, minding my own business, traveling north on the inside lane. Today I had two beeps from motorists. I'm not sure what they're trying to achieve, but I tell you, it scares the hell out of me when I hear a beep come from nowhere for apparently no reason.
The first beep happened down at the pool at sans souci. A white four wheel drive just beeped me, apparently to tell me it was going to pull in front of me to turn left…Continue
Former Marrickville citizen of the year, bike rider and owner of the meeting point for the Dulwich Hill's weekend bike rides, Mick Mazza is shutting down.
Apparently Mick's landlord has jacked his rent up to $950 a week - this has been happening to business all along Marrickville Road, as real estate agents wake to the new reality of rental in Sydney's new f%^king Paddington.
Anyway, the inner west is about to lose an institution - Flickr user yewenyi has a pic …
Anyone got a secondhand roadbike for sale?
Looking for a Med size (adult male) one for my son who is a marathon runner who would now like to give triathlons a go.
Reading the recent threads around riding the Royal National Park and compact cranks had me determined to test my legs in the RNP. Rain and wind, there was no stopping me. So armed with my compact cranks, I started unusually early. Straight away the legs felt heavy and the bike sluggish,…
Its now been a month since I boarded a borrowed brompton and learnt to ride. It seems that bike-lust is an automatic side-effect of acquiring pedal power - so after seeing Julliet (by Viva) in the window at Velosophy (EQ) I coveted her.
A wobbly test ride sealed the deal - so sensationally sit-uppy! Thankfully I have a handsome, encouraging (not to say generous) partner who happened to have a credit card handy - so now Julliet is mine, mine, all mine!!
I even rode her…Continue
On Monday I had to go out to Quakers Hill, a suburb in western Sydney just north of Blacktown. It's on the M7 and quite well served by bike paths, though I've never ridden there directly before, so the precise route was newish to me. Only trouble was it was 41 deg and rising, and it was 2pm. My kids were waiting at high school for me to meet them, I had no choice but to go by bike as the missus had the only car. Fortunately I have double water bottle cages for long rides so I filled up and…Continue
I was a bit late leaving work yesterday. I had to get back, as Mrs Dan had her first dance class of the year that day, and was very keen to attend. I was on a three-line whip to be home by 6pm. It's about a forty minute ride, so I really needed to scoot out not long after five to be sure of getting home on time. However, it had gone twenty past five as I wheeled the bike out…Continue
