How do they get it so wrong?

I saw this article a few days ago, and meant to comment on it then.

It's about Parramatta Road. An unloved piece of traffic mayhem that resembles a car park at peak time, lined with derelict shops and businesses.

There have been plans afoot to improve it for years, and the Planning Institute of Australia is pushing for it to be…

Jacqui Phelan

About a week ago I posted a video about Jacqui Phelan that I found on the net. I had never heard of her before then.…

Touring South Island NZ

The trip was great. We felt like we could just keep going if we weren't due back at work.

The scenery is spectacular and probably would be even better a bit later in the year once the high peaks all have snow (only a few showed their snow to us).

It took a while to get used to the weight (about 30-35kg of luggage for me, about 25-30kg for naomi) but after a few days it felt great to get back on the bike each morning. It was all pretty low intensity riding,… Continue

Fun cycling in Canberra (and the teen came too!)

We've spent the last few days in Canberra with the official aim of going to the Art Gallery. Despite the grumbling ("I'm not riding!") we persisted with taking Ms 17's bike (as well as her). Our first day we set up camp and then caught up with friends to decide how to spend the day until we had to be at the Art Gallery.

I wanted to ride there and it wasn't hard to convince my partner of this. Ms 17 was "not riding", and so was given the option of going in the car with our friends… Continue

Marken, Holland - another lovely ride, another vicious headwind

Holland is flat. Cycling should be a breeze. But in a flat land there's nothing to stop the wind, and you certainly feel it when you're up on a dyke, just outside Amsterdam.

Cyclists have their say on cycleway - watch it here

Hi all, just wanted to thank everybody who's tried the new cycleway on Bourke Rd, Alexandria - the first section of a 7km cycling corridor from Sydney's southern suburbs into the heart of our city centre. Thanks also to those who participated in our video, if you haven't seen it check it out on our website at www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/cycling . Cheers, Dave Woolbank, City of Sydney Cycling Communications Coordinator.

Riding round Texel Island, Netherlands

The Dutch have so many perfect cycle routes it's hard to choose between them. But this one is a favourite of the locals:

The Whisperers

There is something very wrong in the world of bicycling. A significant and well-funded force is afoot, and is actively discouraging cycling. They are everywhere; their influence extends widely and their message is insidious and relentless.

There are many great efforts undertaken to encourage cycling. The benefits of doing so are well known; environmental, health, congestion, road safety, public expenditure savings. And there are some great initiatives; encouraging people to ride to… Continue

Double Stem Accessory Bar

Just saw this over at the Lazy Randonneur:

I don't know about the cost effectiveness of using 4 x EL530s, but I like the double stem idea. Going to file this away for future…

The Easter Egg effect...

What a lovely, warm morning it was today! And I think it also there was evidence that the citizens of Sydney ate too much chocolate over the long weekend.

Why? The sheer number of cycle commuters out there today. There were just hundreds of them. It was a marvellous sight to see. I hope that it is sustained, and it's not just everyone waking up after a weekend of over-indulgence feeling guilty and jumping on their bikes. As I look at the number of cyclists, however, and look at the… Continue

Easter monday ride

What a lovely day for a ride! I managed to get out for a ride this morning - first time since the little one arrived. The logistics are all a bit more complicated now...

So I met up with a mate, and we rode out to Mosman, and down to Taronga Zoo, with two side trips down (and up!) to Bradley's Head and Clifton Gardens. Then back in a loop via Lane Cove. A few reasonable hills to help work off the chocolate...

And, being a nice day, a… Continue
