Gates, Corrugations and a great ride

Yesterday (Sat May 30th '09) four of us rode from Goulburn to Exeter via Canyonleigh (see bikely route).

It was a great day's riding - The company, the weather (We only really started copping showers in the last 10 km or so), the warm Canyonleigh General Store/Coffee shop, and most of the route was on fairly quiet rural roads. The fact that around 30 of the 70 km was along unsealed roads may have been a… Continue

Bike Pedals - Time for a Change - Reasonably Priced Recommendations?

My bike pedals are ANCIENT - with aluminium frame and straps for the toe holds - positively dangerous when you want to take off fast.

Time for a change. I am overwhelmed by the variety of pedals, but have read cycling shoes are more efficient.

Can I have some suggestions for reasonable cost (Avg $150), brand and suppliers.

A Delicate Question for the Girls - How do you choose the right seat for you???

Encouraged by the great enthusiasm, sincerity and generosity nature of the Sydney Cyclist community - the quality of your feedback is truly wonderful - I would like to pose this burning question.

My bike is 25 years old - no suspension. When I bought the last seat, the bike shop assistant showed me his girl seat range, handed me one and told me to "put it up there". I don't know who was more embarrassed him or me. I grabbed it, paid for it and scurried away.

In last year's… Continue

Office Cycle Girl - what can I put in a backpack to wear at the office?

In a month's time I want to be cycling to my new office at North Sydney.

I doubt if this company's new offices will have lockers or closet hanging space, so everything has to be either kept in my desk drawers or brought with me.

The first drive in trip I can dump cosmetics, jewellery, shoes, towels etc, but the rest I will have to scrunch in a back pack.

How do you office girls cope with having reasonable looking clothing for the office that you have to bike in… Continue

Peter Bundy - Bygone Enthusiasm

By chance I ended up in Riverwood having seen a client and found my way into Peter Bundy Cycles. Now that's how I remember a Bike Shop! Parts everywhere, nothing too flashy and a mna 'building' a bike, not pulling one out of a box.
Peter was more than happy to chat and his enthusiasm for helping was wonderful. I'd thouroughly recomend Peter..... and the tip for a cheap Thai meal next door was fantastic. Awesome.

Bicycle fleets - why not?

I was wondering whether any of you might have opinions on the idea of approaching businesses and proactively encouraging them to establish bike fleets for their employees. I have lost count of the number of people who have come up to me saying they'd love to commute to work but for one reason or another don't. How about if firms were to offer bikes as a benefit and as part of this they also offerred maintenance and proficiency courses. I reckon half the problem relates to lack of opportunity… Continue

So what should I have said?

I am writing this post as I never seem to have the right things to say to people when they have a go at me on the roads in a situation where I have not broken the law and because this incident really upset me - so I would like some advice for next time if I choose to engage with the person confronting me.

Today at lunch I was cycling back to the city from Glebe along Broadway in the bus lane until I passed UTS where I merged over to the middle lane so that at Central I would be in… Continue

A small world, or a large web site...

This morning riding down Lilyfield road (towards the city) I approached a cyclist who I had seen several times before. Each time we passed I would think to myself "she looks familiar". So this morning I decided to ask her. I stopped at the red light just behind her and said. Excuse me, but do I know you? (Comic Book Guy: Worst pickup line ever). She had a cautious look on her face. So then I simply asked "Sydney Cyclist?". Bingo.

So, again let me say. Morning Kim.

This got… Continue

Last Friday night... A strange encounter

The other day I mentioned in a comment how I was approached by an individual on the train asking about bikes and then subsequently wanting to take my bike for a test ride. Well, on Friday night around 7:50pm as I road along Martha Street approaching Wentworth Street (near the motor cycle training center under the M4) who do I see standing in the middle of the intersection looking at me and approaching me as I approached him. That's right, the same guy. He motioned for me to stop but I… Continue

Human vs internal combustion

I was riding home this evening, and there was one of those bikes modded with a small petrol engine in the bunch going through the lights at Pyrmont.

I followed him towards Anzac Bridge. As we approached the on-ramp, another cyclist overtook me and tucked in behind him.

We all proceeded up the spiral ramp thing at quite a clip, then at the top the cyclist made his move, pulling alongside the petrolhead to overtake. Petrol guy accelerated, and the two of them proceeded to… Continue

Last night I stole my own bike.

On my way home I stopped at a shop on a fairly busy street (lots of pedestrian traffic). I locked my bike to a sign post and went into the shop to get some food. When I returned to my bike I could not find my keys. I checked and rechecked my bag, checked the pockets of my work clothes. The keys were no where to be seen. Damn, I must have left them in the office. I called my boss but he did not answer his phone. Ok then, I'll have to break the lock and ride back to work. I removed the multi tool… Continue

Everyone's a critic

Bicycles seem to be great conversation starters between strangers. Last saturday night was one such occasion. I was catching the train into the city with my fuji touring bike and there was another guy on the train who also had his bike. He then said to me "Thats's a great touring bike you've got there... [thanks]... but its no good for riding in the city". Oh??? "Why is it no good for riding in the city?" I asked. "Well, the wheels aren't strong enough"... Huh?... I didn't digress in to the… Continue

The Stuff of Cycling Legend

Lock up your chooks, or they will get eaten. And don't leave anything else lying around outside undefended. That could be the message from last night's Bike Sydney Full Moon Ride.

A more bizarre scene is hard to imagine. Try anyway: Glebe foreshore park. 1.30 a.m. Or thereabouts. (Full moon light does not provide adequate illumination to read a digital watch.) Seven cyclists sit in a circle, shivering, eating Tim Tams, cheese and crackers and fruit cake. (Mmmmm, fruit… Continue

Always, no, never........forget to check your tyres

(points for anyone who can guess the reference).

I jumped on the bike tonight after work, turned my first corner in the parking lot and fell off! My front tyre was punctured and went out from under me. So glad nobody saw me :)

In other news, I think Miranda Devine might be onto something. I was coming up Crystal st and saw heaps of bikes parked outside a building. I was wondering to myself "hmm, what bike event is this ?" until I saw the sign for the Sydney Vegan… Continue

Whinge of the day or simply just friday f***wit.

Pretty much guaranteed that this guy is not a cyclist.

When i'm riding down York street and people start j-walking in front of me.....

If i'm nice enough to give way to your child and suggest that you teach him how to cross a road.... Don't tell me to get fucked.

I must apologise, there is a slight misunderstanding here.

I did not suggest that you teach your child how to be a f***wit parent.

I suggested that you simply teach your child to… Continue
