Cycling in Sydney Australia
Coming up this sunday 3 June 2012 is our clubs five year anniversary and we're throwing a family friendly party for all to attend. An event has been put up on Sydney Cyclist for it here.
Check it out and hope to see you there.…Continue

It’s been taking rather a long time to sort out the problem with my fixie forks, and whilst I was riding it for a while the reaction of a mechanic in a local bike shop gave me pause for thought (he went pale, looked at me and simply said ‘Well, I wouldn’t ride it, not even to go…Continue
I've lived away from Sydney for too long. As part of a long good by I'm ordering a new bike.
I'll be writing a blog on the fitting and buying processes starting tomorrow.
Cold, wet, drizzly rain. I had a rehearsal again tonight, so afterwards faced the delights of a fairly long ride home, on the laden Radish, with no waterproofs or even sensible rain clothing…Continue
I believe it qualifies as an interpretation of the pneumatic tyre rather than a rim or solid tyre given the effort to imitate the action of a tire in absorbing and conforming to the road surface. The actual outer surface was bound to leather. Would love to see the inertial forces these had! Germany, 1915 from Farren Collection.…Continue
Hi fellow cyclistes
Sorry to get slightly off topic here, but I'm the lookout for houses, and house-owners who might need a family of sitters to take care of their house in Sydney's Inner South West over the mid-August to end of the year period.
We're a cycling family of four, and happy to look after cats, dogs, gardens, etc in exchange. Get in touch via SydCyc if you've got a place in need of sitters!

The Effect of Active Transport, Transport Systems, and Urban Design on Population Health - Call for Papers Contemporary public health research and policy recognises that active transport (walking, cycling and the use of public transport), transport systems, and urban design affect population health. These associations are evident at international, national, regional, and local levels. They operate through the safety of populations in terms of injuries due to road crashes,…Continue

HSMBA will be stating their case for MTB trails in Hornsby. Please come and support them.
As usual, there will be a vocal opposition group, who know nothing about cycling…Continue
I love the blue bikes. They are incredibly handy, fun, good for a bit of exercise and a nice way to start the day. There are 175 stations along a 13km strip and a station at both ends of my street.
Getting to the airport: 15 minutes.
Getting to a hotel in order to meet a old work mate: 5 minutes.
Getting to the airport bus stop to get the no. 70 bus: 12 minutes. That's as quick as the bus without the wait, which can easily add 20 minutes.
And tonight, I had to drop off…Continue
I've been holding my tongue about this for a while, but I'd be curious to know what everyone's opinion is about this... and whether I'm being entirely unreasonable. Are there no bike path rules? Is it every cyclist for him/herself? This may be an inarticulate rant...
My understanding of bike paths is that they should follow similar rules to that of the road. Keep left, keep to within your lane, give way in the usual road rule way.
I ride every day on bike paths and roads, and…Continue
Americans love their cars, but Chicago is trying hard to define itself as a bike-friendly city, and it's working:

I’ve been working on this for years. It’s something I wanted to be able to do – but not enough such that I went out to practise for hours until I could do it. However, I’ve been gradually getting better, and I think I am now good enough to be able announce <drumroll> that I can at last do a…Continue
I think this one is a bit tough, so I will give you a few clues:
1. These aren't technically our bikes. We had to leave ours at home and rent these for the day but they did the job well, nice light aluminum hybrids with Shimano Alfine 8 Speed hubs.
2. We were about to stop for lunch…Continue
