Compliment or chat-up line?

I overtook a group of guys this morning going up a hill through Pyrmont. They were kitted out in club gear on nice bikes, and going a fair clip.

They caught up with me at the next lights, and one of them said,
'Nice work. You should shave your legs!'

I wasn't sure if that was a compliment, or a pick-up line....

I was also too flummoxed to think of the appropriate witty response:
'You should lose the gears...'

Gotta love folding bikes!

Had to pop in to kmart for one quick item. Wheeled my bike in to the shopping centre - why not, everyone else is wheeling shopping trolleys. Tried to wheel it past the kmart door guy.

"you can't bring that in here".

"ok, I'll lock it to the railing next to you here, then".

"no, bikes shouldn't be in the centre at all".

"how about I fold it up and put it in a trolley?"

"ok" (in an "as if" tone)

Twist, click, clack, flick, push, click. Lift into nearby… Continue

Dumb things you have done

So I did a dumb thing today.

When I got to work I locked my bike up downstairs, as usual, and got in the lift up to the office.

Tonight, when I went downstairs, I unlocked the lock and started to take it off. Something was different, wrong even.

Turns out, I had locked the rear wheel to the frame, but neglected to attach any part of it to the bike rack! Lucky I was in a nice undercover office bike rack or I'd most likely be down one road bike tonight. I feel… Continue

Shortest day of the year: Another great day for a ride

Sunday morning, early, and it's not raining! Unlike just about every other day for a week, or has it been a fortnight... or a month? Can't remember. It's not even particularly cold, considering it's the winter solstice. The roads are wet though and I hate riding in the rain, or on wet roads on a bike without mudguards. Sunday is road-bike day, though -- no mudguards allowed.

But the BikeNorth member unloading his slick-tyred mountain bike from his car outside my house is keen. “It's… Continue

Great bike for sale

I have a beautiful white Orbea Anayet (www.Orbea.com) bike that I paid just under $1000 - 4 rides ago. It is a lovely bike but totally wrong for the type of recreational riding I want to do. I need more of a mountain bike that is a softer ride and more suitable for footpaths and parks. So I'm looking for offers on my Orbea which is absolutely as new, with racing tyres. I will also post on ebay. Just thought someone in Sydney Cyclist might be interested in a bargain! Call me if you would like to… Continue

A chance meeting

This morning was a great example of how much fun this site is.

I just got home from the Addison Rd markets in Marrickville. I was hanging around, drinking coffee and talking to Phil about all sorts of stuff tech, media and cycling related.

While I was there, I spied a bike that looked familiar.

"Hey, I recognise that bike, you're on Sydney… Continue

Old bike collection

The Collectors on Friday night had a great piece on a collector of old bikes. He even has machinery from the 1800's that he uses to build replacement wheels. I wanted to record it for DamianM but was putting children to sleep and had hands full - I've tracked it down for everyone's viewing pleasure.

I think Susan might want to get him and his wife involved in the Tweed Ride next year :) I'm sure a few penny… Continue

A good example

This morning I got out for a ride on the M7, something I haven't done for a few weeks - not since I did that Riverstone ride with John H and Rob K. It was a great day for it, a little cool, light wind, and plenty of others out doing the same. I had done about 20 k's when a much younger, much fitter and faster guy overtook me. He was wearing full team kit (TVH) and we exchanged greetings as he went past. I kept tootling along at an average pace until I came around a bend and there he was,… Continue

An unexpected day of fun on my bike

Sunday was an unexpected day of fun and spontaneous cycling.

Having planned to meet some of the girls from this site for a ride from Waterfall to Wollongong the ominous weather forecast meant we met at Martin Place at 7.30am instead for a shorter ride locally. I was thankful as I had drunk a bit too much wine the night before:)

Cycling along George St at that time was awesome – I had the road to myself, a lovely contrast to the usual trip around the CBD.

As it… Continue
